About Andrew
I earned a Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) degree from Carleton University in 2008. Throughout my program, I learned not only the methodology used to solve various problems in a wide range of branches of mathematics such as Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, and Statistics, but also the underlying theory - a combination which enables me to explain a concept to a student in many different ways.
While earning my degree, I worked as a Teaching Assistant within the School, where I provided group lessons as well as individualized support to first and second-year students.
Years ago, when I attended High School, I enjoyed tutoring my peers.
Currently, I work full-time as an Assistant Bakery Manager within a large supermarket in Orleans, ON. Over the course of the past 5+ years, I have coached and developed colleagues with a wide range of backgrounds, attitudes, and skills profiles.
I am very anxious and excited to teach in my spare time.

There has been an abundance of media reports pointing to the difficulties Ontario students are having with math. My tutoring aims to help students improve their math scores.
A couple of articles that appeared in the newspaper recently, specifically:
Little, C. (2017, August 31). The real issues in Ontario’s schools: The teachers need to be taught math. The Globe and Mail.
Alphonso, C. (2017, August 30). Half of grade 6 students fail to meet Ontario provincial math standards. The Globe and Mail.
paint a rather bleak picture:
• 50% of Grade 6 students did not achieve the provincial standards in math in 2017 (Alphonso, 2017);
• Students who struggle with learning math at a young age are likely to encounter difficulties in high school (Alphonso, 2017);
• 83% of grade 3 teachers and 80% of grade 6 teachers did not receive math instruction at the post-secondary level and that an alarming number of elementary school teachers in Ontario would prefer not to have to teach math (Little, 2017);
• In response to declining trends, Ontario’s government invested $60 million in 2016 to add additional training and supports in elementary schools aimed at improving math scores (Alphonso, 2017);
• Mathematics is connected to fields such as business, economics, engineering, technology, and ultimately a strong economy (Alphonso, 2017).
My tutoring can help in a number of ways. First, by focusing on drills, rote repetition, and memorization of the multiplication table, we will strive to lower a student’s dependence on a calculator and develop a strong foundation for future success. Second, we will aim to improve test scores by focusing on instruction that is better aligned with the EQAO. Third, we will develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills aimed at addressing math phobia and encouraging students to study mathematics at higher levels and become (and train) future leaders.
I am comfortable designing lessons that are based off of Ontario’s Mathematics Curriculum (Grades 1-12) as well as lessons that are suitable for students studying introductory (first or second-year) mathematics (Calculus, Algebra, or Statistics) at college or university. I invite and encourage anybody – regardless of age, background, or mathematical comfort or proficiency level – who is seeking an experienced and motivated tutor to contact me to discuss.
