About Malina

My love for music began in late primary school, where I dabbled in every instrument I could get my hands on until I landed on the two that made me the most excited about music - the saxophone and the flute. As I moved through High school, I was involved in countless bands, organisations and musical ensembles, which later inspired me to take on a Musical Arts degree which I completed in 2014, earning a Bachelor of Musical Arts, majoring in Jazz composition and arrangement. Through this degree I finally absorbed a fuller understanding of music as a whole, which lead me to my current position as a solo sax performer for a House and Pop music duo called SaxBeatz.
We currently gig throughout Sydney, NSW and interstate with a couple of cheeky international gigs under our belt, performing at venues, clubs, weddings, corporate events and festivals.

As my personal experience of learning music when I was starting out felt more narrow, it left big gaps in my musical understanding that I didn’t know how to fill in or how to gather more understanding of it. My aim now when I teach is for my students to experience every possibility their instrument offers from the get-go, and to learn music through a well-rounded process that intrigues and inspires them, encouraging them to explore the capabilities of themselves and their instrument within the limitless, creative world of music. Oh, and really…just for my students to have fun!

About the lesson

Learning music should always be an exciting and engaging experience, which is why I love bringing a warm, encouraging and positive energy to all lessons. Students can expect to learn a wide range of musical skills that doesn’t limit them to just the traditional learning experience of note reading, but encourages them to learn all facets of their instrument and the musical world in which it exists.

We cover everything from sight-reading, improvisation, theory, composition and arrangement to live performance and musicianship, all in a gradual process which is tailored to each student’s natural progression.

With over 12 years experience in teaching music as well as a lifetime of involvement in musical organisations, bands and groups, I’ve learnt that the best recipe for success in learning music is finding a student’s passion through purpose. The music that lights them up and inspires them is the path forward for making music exciting and fun to learn so that their instrument is never left in their case for too long ;)!

This first lesson offered with Malina will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

My lessons are mostly taught at a studio in Brookvale, with studio rates being $46 for the half hour or $80 for the hour to accomodate the studio fee, however - if you're just starting out, I always recommend we begin with 30 minute sessions.

I also teach online and from my private residence in Dee Why if requested, online lessons are $40 for the half hour or $70 for the hour if not during my studio hours.
