About Jacob

I'm currently studying Music at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and I am a passionate linguist. I speak English, Spanish and French fluently, and speak Italian, Portuguese, German, Croatian and Norwegian to varying degrees. I have also recently begun learning Japanese as I am studying abroad in Japan next year! I learn languages in a very organic way by listening and speaking, rather than studying verb tables, rote learning vocabulary and overcomplicating what can be very intuitive. I hope that my vast experience with foreign languages and linguistics can help you in your own language learning journey!

I have previously tutored piano professionally and I have tutored German and French at GCSE level at school. Having recently achieved A*s in A-level Spanish and French, I can confidently help you to achieve the top marks while making learning exciting and enjoyable!

I always aim to tailor lessons to students in a way that they can feel safe and confident when learning to speak a new language. Lessons are informal and friendly and a positive space for learning. I understand speaking a different language can be nerve-wracking, so my lessons are a safe space to try things out and make mistakes.

In my free time I write music, play football and badminton and am very much a cat lover!

About the lesson

Hola! My lessons are friendly and informal and designed to make genuine positive progress towards your goals. Whether you are studying for your GCSEs, A-levels, or are simply interested in learning Spanish for personal reasons, I would love to help!

I have previous experience tutoring and, having learnt several languages myself to varying degrees, I am very confident and experienced in different language learning methods. I am also deeply familiar with the GCSE and A-level syllabuses so can help you achieve the highest grades.

Everybody learns in unique ways so I will tailor my teaching to the specific methods in which you learn best. We'll go over real life spoken and written Spanish together and apply it to your own goals. Learning how to learn more meaningfully and how to feel confident with a foreign language is a big part of my teaching and will help you achieve the best possible results in an intuitive and genuinely enjoyable way.

Lessons will be in the target language as much as possible as a natural way to improve your speaking and listening. We'll have fun conversations about topics relevant to your goals with the language, in a way that encourages you to gain confidence speaking Spanish.

If you are studying GCSE or A-Level Spanish, a typical lesson would look at a topic in the syllabus and whatever work you have been doing in school, and help you become more confident in this area. We'll then look at examples in real life Spanish, so that the language becomes tangible and not just a test you are revising for. This will help deepen your understanding of the language and set you up to achieve the highest marks, in a much more enjoyable way. We'll also explore techniques you can use to improve your understanding of spoken and written Spanish, as well as going through exam techniques and patterns in GCSE/A-Level papers to ensure you feel as confident as possible when entering the exam. We'll practice speaking naturally with conversation in Spanish throughout the lesson, in addition to practicing speaking exams across the different topics, so that you feel the most prepared possible in your exam!

Lessons are flexible and can be from half an hour to an hour. I teach online, as well as giving in person lessons in Cardiff.
