• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

  In 1996 I wanted to change my career. I had been working in the corporate world and was now trying to decide between studying interior design or getting certified as a teacher of ESL. At the time, I chose interior design. Now, 22 years later, I am ready for another career change and have gone back to my original love of language and teaching.

• What makes you passionate about your subject?

  I have always loved the English language and have been a voracious reader all my life. English has a rich vocabulary which allows for many subtle nuances in meaning. It is very satisfying to be able to elegantly express one's thoughts and feelings.

• What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

  I consider the issues most relevant to the individual student in preparing lesson plans.
  Most of my students have advanced reading and writing skills in English.
  It is problems with speaking and listening that is preventing them from engaging more socially with English speakers and communicating effectively with their colleagues at work.
  There are certain sounds in English that do not exist in other languages and these can pose difficulties for ESL earners.
  Pronunciation issues and insufficient vocabulary are roadblocks to functioning effectively in an English-speaking environment.
  In addition, everyday conversational English includes many idiomatic expressions and slang.

• Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  I had a wonderful English teacher in school who encouraged my love of language. Also, early in my career, I worked under a manager who produced all the published literature for the company. He taught me how to write succinctly and accurately for business.

• What are your keys to success?

  I make sure I understand the life/work circumstances of each student and their specific challenges in understanding and participating in English conversations.
  In addition to my certification to teach ESL, I have professional voice training and am a native English speaker.
  I am also familiar with American and British variants in spelling and pronunciation.
  The variety of experience in my business career is particularly helpful for the students who want to focus on Business English.
  I have studied the French and German languages and have had to converse in simple conversation on business trips to Europe. I have experienced how stressful this can be!
