About Maoheng

My name is Mao, I am 16 years old and I'm a student at College Mont-Saint-Louis. I have been passionate about chess and mathematics for nearly as long as I can remember. I started playing chess at age 5 — that's 11 years of experience. I was trained by a Chinese National Master, then by a Woman Grandmaster (WGM).

Today, chess is not just a hobby for me, it is a central part of my life. It has shaped how I think and contributed a lot to my success in mathematics — I am school champion of the Pascal Waterloo math competition. From a 500-rated beginner to a 2300 rapid and blitz player on chess.com, I have deep knowledge across all areas of the game including tactics, openings, middlegame (my personal favorite), and last but not least, endgame.

On the competitive side, I have been runner-up in multiple tournaments including the Quebec Chess Challenge 2025 (3rd place), and I won the Quebec Chess Challenge 2026.

Teaching has also been part of my journey. I taught a class of 20 children back in China and have been coaching my younger brother for over 2 years.

Je m'appelle Mao, j'ai 16 ans et je suis un élève au secondaire Mont-Saint-Louis. Je suis passionné d'échecs et de mathématiques depuis que j'ai commencé à jouer aux échecs à l'âge de 5 ans — 11 ans d'expérience— d'abord, enseigné par d'un Maître National chinois, puis d'une Woman Grand-Maître (WGM).

Aujourd'hui, les échecs occupent une partie centrale dans ma vie. Ils ont contribué à ma façon de penser et directement à mes succès en mathématiques — je suis champion scolaire des concours Pascal Waterloo.

Parti d'un niveau de 500 à 2300 en rapide et blitz sur chess.com, je possède une connaissance approfondie de tous les aspects du jeu : tactique, ouvertures, milieu de jeu (Mon favori) et finale.

Sur le plan compétitif, j'ai été finaliste dans plusieurs tournois, dont le Défi Échiquéen du Québec 2025 (3e place), et j'ai remporté le Défi Échiquéen du Québec 2026.

L'enseignement fait également partie de mon parcours. J'ai donné des cours à une classe de 20 enfants en Chine et j'entraîne mon jeune frère depuis plus de 2 ans.

About the lesson

I specialize in teaching children and young players aged 7–16, from complete beginners to intermediate level. I believe that chess should be fun, and we all learn best when we feel confident and motivated. Improvement and progress matter — but never at the cost of enthusiasm or self-esteem.

First lesson:

I start by playing chess games with the student to find out their level, strengths, and areas to work on — relaxed, no pressure :).

Each lesson lasts around 1 hour and looks like this:
A blitz game to warm up and identify areas to improve.
Explanation of concepts and principles at the student's level.
Puzzles or games to reinforce what was learned

Tournament preparation:

I am also very excited to help players prepare for competitions such as the Quebec Chess Challenge, the Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC), and other youth tournaments.

Other info:
Ages: 7–16 (beginner to intermediate)
Duration: 1 hour to 2 per lesson
Frequency: Once a week is generally enough for steady progression.
Languages: French, English, Chinese
Parents are welcome and encouraged to sit in and follow along, especially for younger children.

Je m'adore enseigner les échecs aux enfants et jeunes joueurs de 7 à 16 ans, des débutants jusqu'au intermédiaire. Je crois que les échecs doivent être amusants, et qu'on apprend tous mieux quand on se sent en confiance et motivé. La progression et l'amélioration sont bien sûr importantes — mais jamais sans coûter l'enthousiasme ou de l'estime de soi.

Premier cours:

Je commence par jouer quelques parties avec l'élève pour évaluer son niveau, ses points forts et les aspects à travailler .

Déroulement des cours:

Chaque cours dure environ 1 heure et se déroule ainsi :
Une partie rapide (blitz) pour s'échauffer.
Explication de concepts et de principes adaptés au niveau de l'élève.
Puzzles ou parties pour consolider ce qui a été appris.

Préparation aux tournois:

Je suis également très enthousiaste à l'idée d'aider les joueurs à se préparer pour des compétitions telles que le Défi Échiquéen du Québec, le CYCC et d'autres tournois jeunesse.
