About James
James Meldrum is one of the most exciting and versatile clarinettist in the UK and Europe. After gaining both a first class BMus (hons) degree and an Advanced PGDip with Distinction from the Royal College of Music, London, he is currently holding the position of principal clarinet with the New European Ensemble in The Hague, Netherlands.
After winning his first orchestral trial at the age of 20, James has played with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the London Chamber Orchestra as well as being guest principal clarinet including trials with international orchestras including Iceland Symphony Orchestra, de Filharmonie Antwerpen and Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen. He has had the pleasure to play under the direction of conductors including Simon Rattle, Colin Davis, Andrew Davis, Andrew Litton, Riccardo Mutti, Lorin Maazel, Esa Pekka Salonen, John Wilson, Charles Mackerras, Vasily Petrenko, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Bernhard Haitink.
Chamber music is at the forefront of James’ career. As principal clarinet of the New European Ensemble, one of the leading contemporary music ensembles in Europe, James has worked with many of the leading composers of the day including Kaija Saariaho, Magnus Lindberg, Mark Anthony Turnage, Jose Maria Sanchez-Verdu, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Heinz Holliger, Bright Sheng, and Carlo Boccadoro. As a member and as soloist with NEuE, he has performed extensively around the world in the leading music festivals including Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Festival Vlaanderen, November Music, Shanghai New Music Week, Beijing Contemporary Music Festival and Svensk Musikvar and touring internationally in UK, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Lebanon, China and Hong Kong.
As well as with the New European Ensemble, James has performed with Ensemble 360, Medici Quartet, Cavaleri Quartet and Piatti Quartet and has collaborated with many renowned musicians including Levon Chilingirian, Heinz Holliger, Susan Daniel, Melvin Tan and Elizabeth Watts, Oliver Knussen, Joseph Horovitz, John Adams, Helmut Lachenmann and Mauricio Kagel.
As a soloist James is in demand internationally as a recitalist and concerto soloist. He has performed Concertos by Mozart, Weber, Finzi, Copland, Adams, Saariaho, Lindberg in venues including the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and Cadogan Hall, London and has performed recitals across USA, China, Europe, Australia, UK, Middle East, South and Central America, Japan and South Africa and featured in festivals including the BBC Proms, the Cheltenham, Aldeburgh and Oxford international festivals as well as on international radio and television.
While studying James held a Foundation and Postgraduate scholarship from the Royal College of Music and also held the MBF Music Education Award, MBF Ian Flemming Award, Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award, and the Wilkins-Mackerras Scholarship and was a Boise foundation Scholarship prizewinner.
As a professor of clarinet, contemporary performance and composition, James tutors at the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague along with his colleagues from the New European Ensemble and works closely with the London Symphony Orchestras Discovery Programme.
He has given classes as the conservatories in Shanghai, Beijing, Nanning and Hong Kong and has also coached in side by side schemes for Dorset Opera and Aldeburgh Music and the Aldeburgh Festival.
His students have successfully gained places to the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity Laben, Birmingham Conservatory, Royal Northern College of Music and Cambridge University.
"...An impressive and varied range of repertoire, all presented with technical precision and great artistic flair in a very personal manner." - Ingrid Gäfvert, allmusic.com
"...James Meldrum gave an elegant, modulated and springy account of the solo part...the slow movement was rather special in its eloquence, flowing with feeling and emotional charge." - Colin Anderson, classicalsource.com
"...One was impressed with James Meldrum's control of the difficult solo part. What really made an impact was his expert handling of the second, jazz-inflected section...Meldrum has only recently graduated from the RCM and he seems set for great things." - Bob Briggs, Seen and Heard International
"...James Meldrum is one of the most talented and musical clarinettists of his generation. He has performance flair and a natural communication with audiences, both as a soloist and chamber musician. He is a supportive colleague in all music making." - Janet Hilton, International award wining recording artist and soloist.
