About Makynlee

Makynlee Hinckley is a 17-year-old violist currently studying with Jonathan Brown at the Colburn Music Academy. She began her musical journey on violin at age 3, then falling in love with the viola and switching from violin at 14. She spent three years in the conservatory program at the Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, Utah. While there, Makynlee studied with Shanae Anderson, violin graduate of Juilliard and Yale School of Music, for one year, then with JT Posadas of the Utah Symphony the rest of her time at the school. From 2023 to 2025, she played in the Lyceum Youth Philharmonic in American Fork. She performed in New York City’s David Geffen Hall with Jenny Oaks Baker, an experience she cherishes to this day. The same year, she played as principal violist of the Philharmonic, and won the Lyceum Concerto Competition two years in a row.
Makynlee has performed in myriad masterclasses, including with Brant Bayless of the Utah Symphony, the Arianna String Quartet, and Sel Kardan of the Colburn School. In May of 2025, Makynlee played as principal violist in the Utah Symphony’s annual side-by-side. She attended the Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival in the summer of 2025, where she took lessons from Nick Cords of New England Conservatory; Ivo Van-der-Werff of Rice University; Erica Eckert of the University of Colorado Boulder; and Misha Amory of the Curtis Institute of Music. Makynlee won second place in the Opus state-level competition, qualifying for nationals.

About the lesson

Welcome to my studio!

I believe that knowing the "why" behind our actions is crucial to our growth as musicians. While my lesson plans are tailored to each student, my primary goal is to help them form their own opinions about the music they play.

The first lesson will consist of a conversation regarding their confidence and skill. For music theory, the student would explain to me what they have learned, where they feel comfortable and where they want more help, etc. Violin and viola students would explain the last piece they learned, any music they would like to learn in the future, and where they would like to see the most progress. From there, we can build lesson plans consisting of the following:

- 1 to 2 pages of music theory exercises, combining review problems with new ideas (for music theory students)

-1 assigned etude, 1 scale, and 1-2 solo pieces that we will work on each week (for instrumentalists)

I ask that students practice at least once a day. The amount of time doesn't matter to me as much as your focus and dedication during your practice session(s). However, daily practice is incredibly important for progress.

I love feedback; if there is anything I can do to improve as your mentor, I am more than happy to accommodate.
