I teach all aspects of music theory, including melody-writing, harmony, part-writing, counterpoint, thematic development and formal structure. Moreover, it is always my aim to show the practical application of concepts in these disciplines directly to the act of composing music. I am also experienced in the craft of engraving musical scores and will show you the proper way to do this.
In addition, I teach orchestration and instrumentation. Studying these disciplines allows the composer to craft music that is idiomatic, balanced, and the appropriate difficulty level for the performers.
My method for teaching includes: Answering any questions you have; I will attempt to answer and provide you with help and advice around that topic too, for extra aid. Lecturing and discussing a given topic that you would like to learn about. Reviewing and Critiquing your composition/work; in addition to this I will set tasks and teach you about topics which relate to the feedback given, which leads to my next method. Setting homework based off either your own work or the topic you want to learn about. This last one should help you learn about the topic and practice it in your own time, and hopefully you will find it applicable to your own work. At the end of the day, I want these lessons to be catered to you and your needs. I am very flexible about how I teach, so if there is a particular thing you would like to do, I’ll try my best to do it!
I am also deeply interested in the philosophical, psychological, and historical aspects of music composition. I find that delving into these broader facets of music can produce a far more profound understanding of composition than theory and technique alone can provide.
Composing music is what makes me feel at peace, at my happiest and at my best. I hope to pass on and share what I have learnt and continue to learn to those who have a passion for learning and music themselves, as well as enriching like minded creatives’ projects with my music.
