About Richard
With degrees in composition from both the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, along with a bachelor's degree in performance (guitar) from the Australian Institute of Music, I bring a wealth of knowledge to every lesson. I have worked as a composer and arranger all over the world for prestigious organisations such as Opera Australia and Abbey Road Studios, where I have contributed to both large-scale productions with million-dollar budgets and smaller, more intimate projects.

I offer tailored music composition lessons designed to meet individual goals and interests, whether you're just starting out or aiming to refine your skills in composing for various mediums.
I specialise in a wide range of composition styles, including screen music for film, TV, and advertisements, as well as concert music. My experience spans composing for large orchestral ensembles, chamber groups, and everything in between. I can guide you through the process of composing for any sized ensemble, whether you want to develop the skills to notate music for live musicians or learn how to produce realistic-sounding compositions using DAW software.
In my lessons, you will master how to prepare scores and instrumental parts using notation software such as Sibelius or MuseScore, develop rich harmonies, melodies, and textures, and transform your compositions into fully realised works. I also offer instruction in orchestration and arranging, drawing from my extensive experience working in film, musical theatre, concert music, and I can teach you the vital skills required to orchestrate effectively for any ensemble, whether it's for film scoring, TV music, musical theatre, or classical concert music.
My teaching approach is holistic and student-centred, whether you're an adult or a child, including those with learning difficulties. I customise each lesson to the student's needs, creating a supportive and enriching environment where creativity and musical growth can thrive.
If you're passionate about composing music for any medium or ensemble, I’m here to help you develop your skills and guide you through every step of the process.
