About Ferdinand

I am a network and security engineer, In 2018/2019 academic session completed my Masters in Engineering in Information and Network Security from University of Limerick Ireland. My thesis was on evaluation of various Linux open source firewalls. The thesis was a practical study on the strength of these firewalls and its suitability on SOHO solution deployment when the cost of acquiring a commercial firewall is an issue. A detailed practical examination of the Firewall rules, Firewall implementation and withstanding Pen-testing aimed at exploiting specific weaknesses. Packet generator (Hping3) was used to craft TCP/UDP packets and sent to these firewalls; packet analyzing tool (Wireshark) as well as the firewall logs were used to study the behaviour of the firewalls. The evaluation was carried out to ascertain the reaction of the firewalls in the different stages of the anatomy of attack. A summary evaluation was established using different scenarios to compare their reaction to reconnaissance, active scanning and actual attack. Since security is not a physical quantity, deploying security equipments in different simulated scenarios in labs and observing its reaction is a practical way to evaluate the effectiveness of the security system. But the case will be different in a production environment which will require prompt patching of the firewall operating systems, upgrades when necessary, monitoring the device and evaluating the syslog or alert from the Security Operating Center. I also hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Engineering from Enugu State University. I have years of industry practice and experience as well as certifications in networking. My experiences gathered over years of practice have been on networking engineering, network and information system security, NOC engineer and Helpdesk.

About the lesson

My quest for learning from others and teaching others as well can be said to have propelled me in no small way in recent effort to get back to the education sector after some years of professional practice in the private sector. Without much of traditional classroom experience to count on, I have as an engineer over the years engaged constantly in subordinate and peers tutoring and mentorship. Experiences also in working closely with sales team have seen me getting into research to get theories behind the designs and proposed system deployment to backup my proposals.
To me teaching should be geared mainly on understands existing theories, figuring out the missing link between innovative ideas and conceptualization into reality. It tends to guide a vague idea to something of value by constant polishing; can give birth to a new product or can solve a puzzle while that idea does not perfectly fit the situation. Experiences as a student also taught me that there are always underlining basics in every subject. These basics are the building blocks for further developments in that subject. A student understanding of the basics is critical to a student’s progress in understanding topics taught in that subject.
