About Elijah

Hello friends, my name is Elijah Willie, and I am currently a Bioinformatics developer at a startup called Fusion Genomics. We focus on creating molecular diagnostic tools for infectious diseases using next-generation sequencing. I studied bioinformatics and statistics at Simon Fraser University and subsequently did a master's in bioinformatics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). My time during my undergrad and master's studies cultivated my interest in data science as well as bioinformatics. I was a teaching assistant for the Masters of Data Science program at UBC for the duration of my masters. After that, I continued working with the team to create data science courses including programming for data science, data visualization, and machine learning. Besides bioinformatics and data science, I also have interests in extracurriculars such as soccer, gaming, chess, and traveling.

About the lesson

My years of experience teaching, have led me to believe that students learn best by building on simple familiar concepts. I use real-world examples and build on simple ideas to motivate more complex ones. I believe that using examples helps drive critical thinking. I believe it’s important for educators to have a willingness to learn and be flexible to change. I am open to learning and integrating new teaching philosophies. I understand that as generations come and go, students will have different needs and respond to different philosophies of teaching. It’s important that we adapt our philosophies to facilitate these new needs, however, I believe that distilling complex ideas using real-world examples will continue to be a fundamental pedagogical strategy.
