About Samuel

Hey,

I am a 3rd Year Computer Science undergraduate at the University of Cambridge. I am working at 2:1 in my degree. I did A levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics as well as an AS in Biology, with results of A*A*A*A.

Ideally, I would like to help with maths/further maths/computer science at GCSE, A level or IB. I can also help with admissions tests such as the csat.

During year 12 of my sixth form studies I volunteered to teach GCSE maths lessons for 1 hour a week as well as give 1:1 tutoring for 1 hour a week to 2 students. This meant helping to plan lessons, direct them and work through the problems with the student in the class. The 1:1 tutees had reading difficulties and were intially working at an E grade in GCSE maths. They both quickly improved to a C grade, doing far better than their predicted grades of E or D.

Finally. as I come from a working class background, I know what it can be like to recieve very little support from teachers, so if you find yourself in need of tuition and this tuition is too expensive for your particular situation, I will do what I can to help.

About the lesson

When it comes to maths, I am aiming to understand your strengths and weaknesses to help give you a deeper understanding of the topics and build your intuition. This is so that you can handle any unfamiliar/surprising questions that would usually catch students off guard. The way I approach this is to work through examples with you step by step and try to help you understand not only what you're doing but why. Once you feel like you can work through problems and explain them to yourself in this way, its really all about exam preperation - working through lots of past papers and building the habits that help you avoid small mistakes and help maximise your results.

As for computer science and coding, it is quite similar. I am still looking to build your understanding and intuition, but quite often we may find it useful to look through implimentations of the algorithms as well. I will make sure your understanding is being tested properly for each topic by working through plenty of problems, be that past paper questions or coding challenges.
