FIRST OF ALL, DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY TOLD YOU when they said that you weren't smart, when they said that you weren't trying (applying yourself), or when they said that you 'would never make it.'
Trust me when I say that we'll make it together.

Rest assured that this is not my first tutoring rodeo. I worked with two brothers in the third and fifth grades recently. The third-grade brother was having some trouble with math (but turns out he just had to slow down, read carefully, and take his time in understanding what was being asked of him).
The fifth-grade brother was having trouble with English spelling (as his second or third language), and comprehending what he was reading. Turns out that he just needed some guidance on the role of certain words in a sentence, the way some questions are written to try and trick you, and that a lot of those big daunting words are just a bunch of teeny tiny words put together.

Seeing those brothers learn and gain maturity through comprehension made me feel that I was making a positive difference, which is very important to me.

Oh-- You're back!

I get that It's hard to build on the skill of reading in a time and place where it may seem that no one reads anymore. Don't worry, I'm here for you, and we will conquer the world of words and literary devices together.
You wouldn't believe the peace that can be found in a good book, in the right place, on a beautiful day. Just give it a chance, outside of the classroom setting! I'll teach you some practical things about books and research too.

Reading is so much more than words on a page. Once your skills improve, you will find yourself a more confident orator (oral speaker/ presenter), you will feel empowered to ask clarifying questions and make more informed choices for yourself, and you will feel more secure navigating the world that you live in!

About the lesson

Did you ever want to learn to LOVE reading? Well, you have come to the right place! Learn from someone who adores books and the wonderful worlds they open :)

Lessons start with getting to know the student through the subject at hand, and hearing from them as to how they perceive their struggle/ what troubles most about the topic.

From there, the student's workbook/ materials are reviewed, and select excerpts/ worksheets are completed, then analyzed and discussed. Importantly, a tutor must know what is expected of the student by their schoolteacher and at approximately what times those evaluations will occur (learning schedules, rubrics, and tests).

Importantly, during the first few classes, students are quizzed and taught about different parts of a sentence, and how to recognize them (verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc...).

Every lesson contains a customized vocabulary list, along with a spelling test/ dictée, that will gradually increase in complexity. The end of every session will end with a handout/ communiqué to the student's parent/ guardian on what was covered during that session.

I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THREE- CUEING AS A LEARNING METHOD, because that is not real teaching, and it does not, will not, and has never worked. My vision for the work that I do on this platform is to get students excited about the world of reading, and help them gain the confidence they need to be able to explore and comprehend topics of their choosing, that matter to them.

Lessons are for youth ages five to fifteen, but can easily be customized for older youth as well.
