About Joseph

I am an A-level student of Physics, Philosophy and Mathematics from Coventry who has a passion for music, having played guitar now for 9 years and had vocational experience in a rock band for the last 4 years, learning how to collaborate and communicate with other musicians whilst performing and writing, playing the part of the lead guitarist and vocalist. I completed GCSE music in 2016, walking away with a grade A where we were assessed on our performance, theory and composition skills. I also took part in an internship in a the music department of a Birmingham college where I got to work with the music technicians and teachers and gained experience with the performance tutors at the college who were mentoring B-tech level music students in their solo and group performance work.

About the lesson

For any beginner musician, the key is to give them the freedom to study what they want to study at the same time as imparting important knowledge for them long-term. More specifically, students could spend their time learning pieces that they have chosen which they personally enjoy or, if they wish, pieces that I select for them which I can tailor to their tastes (in genre or artists). In either case, students will know that they have the freedom to study what they enjoy whilst developing the dexterity and early theoretical knowledge which is so important for their development as musicians. It's always best to encourage enthusiasm in new students.

More intermediate level students who have gotten to grips with the basics of performance and theory will have the same treatment in the freedom to choose what they study and I will work on a case-by-case basis to see what kind of skills it is most important for those students to develop. I will also pay particular attention to how they want to apply their knowledge. For example, if a student wants to develop skills relevant to group performance (in a band or ensemble) then I can focus on jamming and playing music together, developing timing and improvisation skills etc... On the other hand, if a student wants to focus on developing skills relevant to their own composition and music writing, I can focus on the important theoretical work related to that and help broaden their horizons in terms of the techniques that they can include in their music.

I am happy to work with students interested in pretty much any genre. Most of my experience is in rock, pop, punk, metal, prog rock and blues.
