About Allegra
Hi! My name is Allegra Lee, and I'm currently an 11th grader at Phillips Academy Andover. I enjoy dancing Kpop, tap, and ballet, doing Flow Arts (if you don't know what this is and you'd like to learn more about it, please don't hesitate to ask!) and taking photos for my school’s newspaper. Of course, I also LOVE math and science. On campus, I do group STEM tutoring in our Academic Skills Center, as well as science tutoring for chemistry in our Science Study Center. I’m always ecstatic when I’m able to share my passion for STEM with others, whether that be through tutoring or working through a tough challenge problem with a classmate. I think every person deserves to experience the joy that STEM can bring, when done in a way that encourages the student through tough times. I am very lucky to say I have such wonderful memories from my years of taking STEM classes at PA, and I hope to pass this love I feel on to younger students of my own.

Education/Qualifications/Target Audience: My target audience is students currently taking Algebra II and/or anything below, as well as students who have completed one year of chemistry in either their freshman or sophomore year. Teaching Method/Techniques: For me, drilling practice problems is the best way to become familiar with a subject, so this is the main focus of my tutoring curriculum. I also rely on resources such as Khan Academy to give students another perspective on certain topics, as not everyone interprets information the same way. The last pillar of my teaching method is an emphasis on collaboration. Working with students on problems to solve them, rather than lecturing, effectively allows them to develop a solution process while also breaking concepts down into essential foundations. What Sets Me Apart As a Tutor: As a student enrolled at a relatively rigorous preparatory school in the U.S, I feel extremely fortunate to have been exposed to a math and science curriculum which draws heavily on logical reasoning and a critical perspective—something I did not experience in public school. First being exposed to this curriculum, I was at first confused why my friends seemed to be learning such complicated topics at an extremely fast pace while I continued working on foundational topics. However, after three years learning in this style, I clearly see the benefits of looking at seemingly simple topics with a different perspective. My teachers continuously pushed the question, “why does this work?” and urged us to wonder, “what are the connections I can make?” I believe this sort of mindset, one which questions everything, logically reasons out operations, and refuses to simply memorize formulas, allows students to excel in their current grade-level STEM classes but also develop a foundation ensuring success in highly advanced STEM topics. If possible, I would like to expose as many students as possible to this style of learning. I believe it will help them view math and science through a critical, broader lens, amplify their confidence, and help them stand out among their peers. A Typical Lesson Plan: - Review student's weekly homework, find errors and problems they were unable to complete. - Complete sets of practice problems that I provide, targeted towards specific topics within their subject. - While going through practice problems, create solution steps that the student can add to their toolbox. - If needed (especially for science), provide some textbook reading and video resources which we can break down together for a more solid understanding of concepts. - Assign practice problems the student can complete before the next tutoring session, which we will go over then.
