About Mayelí

Hi! I'm Mayelí, and I'm a second-generation Bay Area-based high schooler. I am a varsity debater, a tennis player, a dancer, an activist, and a contortionist. I lead my school's investment club, as well as my school's Latinos Unidos. In addition, I have been acting for 10 years. Growing up, math has always been my favorite subject. By 8th grade, I had exceeded the 12th-grade level in math, reading, and writing. I am planning on majoring in math in college and hopefully becoming a professor. In terms of tutoring history, here are some things parents have said regarding my services:
"Mayeli, thank you for what you are doing. He [student] seems so much more confident with his math"
"You are doing a great job with her [student], other kids should benefit from this."
Working with younger kids has always been a passion for me, which I believe is reflected in my quality of tutoring.

About the lesson

I like to start off by getting to know each student and their individual learning style. I'll ask them what they're learning in school and then issue a pretest accordingly to pinpoint what they may need help with. I also can help with test prep such as ISEE, HSPT, or SSAT for middle school or high school entrance.
For post-tutoring activities, I will assign work on Khan Academy if needed. Also, if requested by a parent, I will send weekly updates via email.

A typical lesson plan includes an update on what the child is learning in school, homework revision, and then an extension on those topics. I prefer to tutor kids from grades 3-7, but am open to tutoring any grade below 9th as long as your child can act appropriately in a tutoring setting.

What may set me apart from other tutors is the fact that, although school is a huge part of my life, I am not the stereotypical "nerd". In my free time, I love to skate, design jewelry, do contortion, dance, and debate. I am also committed to forming a relationship with your child that makes it so that they are comfortable asking questions when they need help rather than feeling intimidated as many of us do in a typical classroom setting.
