About Alec
Just two days prior to my mother's passing, in one of our last conversations, my mom and I sat in my bedroom with a pen and a piece of paper as I asked her about the goals she had for me in the next chapter of life without her. While struggling to speak, she encouraged me to “pursue a profession which would best utilize [my] gifts and, equally important, enter a field for which [I] am deeply passionate.” Though I write this today without my greatest advocate, I know that pursuing a career in medicine is the right decision for me. I want a career in which I can influence the lives of families like ours. I want to effectively diagnose patients, but I want to make them feel heard, seen, and respected throughout the process. I want to lead treatment teams, but I want to keep the patient at the center. My lifelong love of science and my recent laboratory and clinical research has helped to further confirm my love for the field of medicine, but the one-on-one experiences with patients have inspired me to become a physician. While it is true many of my experiences came from ophthalmology, my mother’s health struggles and my research at the Van Andel Institute and Mercy Health Saint Mary's have diversified my interests within medicine, and I look forward to discovering the specialty in which I can best care for patients.

I became a biology and chemistry tutor because I wanted to find ways to utilize my skill set to make a difference in the education of my peers. Having taken these challenging courses, it is meaningful to work alongside these students, watch them gain confidence, and eventually enjoy the subject they initially dreaded. Tutoring has not only helped my peers, but it has helped me become a better student. When I tutor I get to refresh myself on old course material and sensitize myself to the diverse learning styles of the students with whom I work. Having attained a Bachelor of Science with majors in Biochemistry and Biology, I am well versed in a myriad of scientific topics and look forward to helping you!
