About Mathew
I have a Ph.D. in Information Technology. I have been teaching fundamental electronics and computers for more than 30years. I spent 23 years in the military doing everything from repairing 10,000-volt vacuum tube radios to establishing satellite network communications across the globe. I started a shed business where I leveraged my IT skills to expand the brand to 7 states which then reached $1M in annual sales in less than 4 years. I didn't care for being a business owner and am now a professor of Information Technology.

I prefer hands-on teaching methods. Students seem to grasp cyber theories much more when they can apply them in real life. For instance, when I teach cybersecurity, I teach the student how to hack computers so when they apply the defensive measures, they have a greater understanding of what their actions are doing to protect their cyberinfrastructure.
I also believe in "learning through failure". There is a big leap between theory and application. Students will fail. Many times. So I monitor the student's progress as they complete real-world scenarios. If the student is making headway towards the learning objective, I will allow them to continue to struggle, because that is where the learning happens. If they go off track, I will guide them back without giving them the answer. Some students find this frustrating when they are in the moment, but all have reported this method as a positive learning experience after the fact. The students that I have taught since they were freshmen now take courses with me ask me a question and my response is:
"I'm going to let you struggle for a bit longer."
Student - "Augggg, I knew you were going to say that!"
"Do you want me to give you the answer?"
Student - "No! I want to try one more thing. Come back to me after you help her."
