About Katie

Able to teach at the student's house or mine at a time that suits you. I can only teach on weekends or during the week between 10-1pm during school term. Some background about me: I was in the gifted and talented art program at Applecross SHS. Obtained Bachelor of Media (film studies) at Murdoch University. I’ve sold several paintings and exhibited in many prestigious exhibitions since 2014, including the Mandorla Youth Art Prize, the Perth Royal Show in 2014, 2016, and the Perth Royal Show Landscape Prize 2018 and 2022, and the Rottnest Foundation Art Exhibition 2019. I’m interested in acrylics, watercolors (some oils), and mixed media. Subjects - landscapes, still life, portraits, abstract, color theory, art history.

About the lesson

I start off teaching the 5 elements of drawing because this is how I was taught and has proven effective as a solid foundation. Learning to draw is like following a recipe; if you have all the ingredients, you can’t go wrong! When you have the basics mastered, you can then start developing your own style. Much like a cook will experiment with flavors before creating their own niche dish. You can experiment with your own creative expression with mark making and color choices. I teach adults and children from the age of 8 and upwards. I have a working with children check and a certificate 3 and 4 in School Based Education Support, making me a qualified Teacher's Assistant.

Perfect! Katie's art lessons (sketching) were the highlight of my daughter's weekend. Her playful approach had my 11-year-old experimenting with new styles of drawing without fear of mistakes. Katie taught fundamental techniques that improved my daughter's confidence and made her feel like she doesn't need to be perfect, she just needs to keep trying. She has a special gift for making learning feel like play while still building real skills. My daughter now proudly displays her artwork all over our home and loves it when mummy shows it off to friends and family.

Things started off well with elena, but recently she has started a new habit of not communciating with me, ignoring emails. Ive honestly felt quite disrespected by the mother, her girls were a delight. But I refuse to be treated rudely.

My 9yo son was apprehensive about getting a tutor and was really not interested, but Katie was engaging and grabbed his attention as soon as she arrived. His attitude towards literacy has changed and as soon as she left he asked when she was coming back - he couldn't wait another week.
