About Music
John Tasman was born in Hong Kong and began his clarinet study during his secondary school years. He excelled in his studies, frequently performing as a soloist and participating in exchange performances across Europe and Asia. His exceptional skills earned his school numerous awards in solo, ensemble, and orchestral performances.
Later, he pursued advanced studies at the National Music Conservatory of Music in Cergy-Pontoise, France (CNR de Cergy Pontoise), majoring in clarinet and chamber music performance, graduating with the highest honors.
Upon his return to Hong Kong, Tasman actively pursued his musical career, performing as a contracted clarinetist with various ensembles. He served as the principal clarinetist for the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Hong Kong, as well as the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia and the woodwind quintet Viva! Pipers, performing in various capacities for Leap Performers Hong Kong and other organizations.
Tasman was dedicated to innovative performances, serving as a founding member and instrumentalist for the diverse ensemble Music Pi. He also contributed to the innovative woodwind group Reed4ble as a founding member and clarinetist.
In 2016, Tasman established the K622 School of Clarinet, serving as its director and instructor, dedicating himself to nurturing young talents. Students under his guidance have achieved outstanding results, receiving numerous awards in various exams and competitions. Excellent students are spread globally, including those from institutions such as the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong Chinese University, Hong Kong Baptist University, and the Hong Kong University. Some have even pursued further studies abroad at institutions like the Manhattan School of Music in the United States, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in the United Kingdom.
In 2019, he founded the K622 Clarinet Ensembles, later registering it as an organization in 2020, serving as its artistic director. Recently, the ensemble received funding from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council for its project "Crash & Explore - Commissioned and Performance Project for Clarinet Ensemble Works," which was successfully performed in series.
Tasman received significant guidance from teachers such as Joseph Yu and Prof. Pierre Dutrieu, as well as from other mentors, peers, and his family, for whom he is deeply grateful.
Tasman is now currently moved to UK and living at Drayton, Norwich
