About Ricky
Hey! I have seven years experience teaching EAS100 Planet Earth to students from all backgrounds, in all programs, and in all years of study (1st - 4th year) at the University of Alberta. In EAS 100 I taught the following topics: topographic mapping and rivers; the rock cycle (rocks and minerals); plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes; geologic principles and mapping geologic units; weather, climate, and atmospheric circulation patterns; glaciers and glaciation; ocean circulation patterns and sea level rise; fossils, biostratigraphy, and relative age dating techniques; and links between human activities, burning non-renewable resources, greenhouse gases, and global warming. My academic training includes the following areas: physical geography, global climate change, paleo-environmental change, contemporary Arctic climate change, spatial data analysis in ArcGIS, remote sensing, describing and interpreting glacial landforms and sediments, glacier dynamics and glacial hydrology, and field techniques in extreme environments and coastal tropical environments. My experience in the classroom includes helping students who are managing dyslexia, panic attack and anxiety symptoms, issues with attention and focus, as well as supporting international students whose first language is not English. I’m patient, a strong communicator, friendly, and non-judgmental about the learning process. I'm also a recipient of a Graduate Teaching Award from the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta, which was awarded in recognition of academic excellence in the field of teaching and mentorship.
