About Ben

I'm a 2010 Oxford Geography graduate based in South East London. Since graduating I have worked as a social policy analyst for some leading nonprofit organisations. I am still working full-time but have very flexible hours, enabling me to carry out tutoring around work.

I specialise in teaching geography at all levels, a subject in which I secured top grades throughout my schooling and into university (where I gained a high 2.1). I can also teach History at GCSE and A Level, and Microsoft Excel, which I regularly use in my job and in which I am an expert.

I attended a relatively poor quality comprehensive school, and so know what it takes to attain highly in challenging circumstances. The approaches that I successfully applied to my own education are those which I teach to pupils. In particular, I strongly believe that encouraging pupils to develop independent thought, and the ability to talk confidently around their subject, is just as important as training for an exam itself. This helps to instil confidence and the ability to negotiate unsuspected challenges. For instance I often encourage pupils to discuss current affairs and debate issues one way or the other.

I am relaxed, friendly and chatty, and try to encourage children to discuss their possible approaches to each question or issue.

Along with geography and history tutoring I can also help advise on university applications. In particular I am an expert in the Oxbridge admissions process; meanwhile I was accepted to every university I applied when going through the university admissions process - all Russell Group universities - and am adept at personal statement writing. I have also applied and gained entry to to US Ivy League universities, where I have been successful in gaining scholarships, and have an understanding of the US system if required.
