About Kate

Hello!

My name is Kate. I'm a 35 year old elementary school teacher based in Victoria, BC, Canada. I have many years of teaching experience in Canada and in Asia. In addition to helping students academically, I provide my students with skills and strategies that focus on their emotional well-being.

When I'm not teaching, you can find me enjoying the outdoors! I enjoy hiking, trail running, road running, cycling, swimming, and camping.

About the lesson

My experience as an educator includes a wide range of teaching pedagogies. I began my teaching career in Victoria, BC, working as a Behaviour Interventionist with children with ASD, as well as leading a Reading Recovery group for students struggling with reading. Following that, I taught at an Early Years Montessori school, volunteered at a preschool in Belize briefly, and taught at an independent school in Taipei, Taiwan for several years. Moreover, I had the opportunity to take on the role of Vice Principal during my fourth year in Taipei. I am currently working as a Teacher On-Call for the Greater Victoria School District, and have mostly been teaching in primary and Learning Support classrooms.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to support students with literacy, including but not limited to reading recovery/ strategies, comprehension, analysis, and evaluation skills. Additionally, I have supported English language learners in various settings. My time in Taiwan, in particular, was a unique opportunity to hone my skills and observe students making great strides in their English language development.

As we continue to live through uncertain times, there is one thing I am certain about: providing today’s children and youth with the skills to navigate our ever-changing world is imperative. The role of an educator involves much more than simply providing students with knowledge. It is about instilling confidence and curiosity and guiding students to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. It is about modeling compassion and empathy. It is about helping students cultivate resilience and grit in order to navigate life’s adversities. As an educator, I believe it is my job to embody all this and more in hope of inspiring my students to do the same.
