About Torien

In addition to being an educator, I am a classically trained, award-winning professional playwright, actor, producer, and dramaturg. I have analyzed countless scripts, studied phonetics, written and delivered speeches, toured internationally, founded a theatre company, written policy for non-profit arts organizations, and received up to $200,000 in grants for all of the above. Since 2015 I have facilitated classes, workshops, and residencies for emerging writers, artists, and everyday people, often teaching writing fundamentals, reading comprehension, and acting at various schools and theatre companies.

At Simon Fraser University I studied accessibility and autistic/ADHD modes of creativity for my graduate thesis research, finishing with a 3.98 GPA. As a Teaching Assistant and guest lecturer I have led tutorial discussions, critiqued essays, graded exams, and guided student research. Over the past year I have been tutoring at Vertex Academy and Milky Way Education and conducting games-based learning research as a Senior Educator at Brainiacs Adventures.

All of this experience has provided me with an interdisciplinary understanding of English academic writing, literature, reading comprehension, public speaking, rhetoric, and performance. More importantly, I have learned how to teach students at various stages of development, abilities, and interests. I believe every student has natural curiosity, a desire to learn, and a need to communicate, and few things bring more joy than discovering these with them. If this sounds like your style, I'm the tutor for you :)

Based on my qualifications and experience, I am comfortable offering lessons to students of all ages in the following areas:

- ENGLISH (reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, phonetics, creative or academic writing, literature)

- PUBLIC SPEAKING / DEBATE (confidence, leadership, vocal technique, memorization, Canadian and British parliamentary debate formats, rhetoric, speech writing)

- FINE ARTS (acting, audition prep, creativity, critical thinking, tabletop game design, elementary-level visual art)

My pedagogy takes inspiration from my professors at Simon Fraser University, my theatre mentors, and the Reggio Emilia approach which embraces a multimedia emergent curriculum honouring students' agency, curiosities, and modes of learning.

This might look like inviting students to: conduct historical research projects around their own personal interests; learn literary devices through creative writing exercises; understand classical literature through performance or tabletop RPGs; or work through difficult material through accessible study guides, creative media, and video essays. Any subject can become engaging this way!
