I am passionate about teaching. Teaching to me is tutoring, mentoring and modelling lives.
I teach English Language. English Language is a very important subject because it is the lingua franca in most countries of the world. While teaching the subject, I go beyond just making my students understand the content. I make sure there is a change in their behaviour due to experience I expose them to.
When teaching the subject I create a very positive study environment which allows my students to feel comfortable, safe and engaged. I create opportunities that make them responsible for them own learning.
Knowing my students by name, their personality traits and their different learning styles are my top priority. To achieve these I use a photo register. I change my classroom set up for time to time. I also use classroom decorated with my students’ pictures and other relevant posters.
Laying down the rules early is quintessential to my success as a teacher. Therefore, I involve my students in this method to be sure that they are aware of the rules and the consequences. I post the ground rules and always lean towards positive, rather than negative re-enforcement. I make myself available to my students and motivate them to achieve high grades by setting them high target grades.
In addition, I apply a lot of differentiation strategies when teaching. Students are sometime grouped by the level of the ability and given tasks at their level. While at other times, I group the seemingly weak ones with the strong one and use peer to peer tutoring. I give my students task for which the outcomes are open – ended. I equally use the ‘no correct answer’ strategy. The students are given the opportunity to take a viewpoint or make an interpretation and to justify their answers with evidence from a text.
Another teaching strategy, I adopt, is the use of games which is one of the most important ways to teach efficiently in a language class. Nothing is more fun than playing games, as it makes whatever they learn very memorable. It also encourages sharing, helping each other and working as a team. Such games include Pencil Puzzles such as crossword and Word Search. Others Bean Bag toss, Charades and concentration games which have all proved very useful for teaching vocabulary, Nouns and Verbs. I equally use Flash Cards, New Vocabulary Calendar depending on the lesson for the day or week.
In teaching Comprehension Passages, I sometime use role play. Through this method, students present their viewpoints of a character in the form of a dialogue or presentation. In addition, I use problem – solving tasks through which the students consider the author’s intent (what effect is the text aiming to have on the reader). Furthermore, I adopt the use of graphic and sentence organizers which help students focus on text structure as they read. I often provide students with tools they can use to examine and show relationships. The students are consequently helped to write well – organized summary of a text. In addition, in answering comprehension questions, I task the students to preview the questions which help them have proper focus on their reading. I equally use the reciprocal reading strategies which help the students develop prediction, clarifying, questioning and summarising skills.
The clear understanding of part of speech is an integral part of a student’s education. Nouns, Verbs and other sentence pieces lay the foundation for proper use of the English Language. Hence when teaching ‘Parts of Speech’ I move from simple to complexity. I start with the Nouns. Students are ordered to mention one another’s names. They could point and touch objects around them.
I move to verbs; I ask my students to carry out different actions, using a role play. They act as ‘Noun’ carrying out the actions – ‘Verb’. My next stage is to introduce the Adjective. Here I inform my students, “Adjectives are words that add colour to Nouns”. From this stage I move to the Adverbs. I describe Adverb “as how a person or something does the action” For the Prepositions, they are described as “where the action take place”. Pronouns on the other hand are taught as “words that replace nouns”. A Conjunction is however taught as “the rope that joins the word and phrase”, while an Interjection displays emotions. To add fun to the learning process I use a lot of games, group work and class discussions.
As a teacher of English Language, I believe students are better writers when they have an understanding of grammar which cannot be isolated from reading and writing. Therefore I involve my students in extensive reading and writing. I use peer to peer marking. This helps students to carefully examine their own writing and identifying their errors. I equally create the opportunities for my students to read aloud.
I have always realised that the best way to teach phonics is systematic. When teaching I move my students through a planned sequence of skills rather than teaching particular aspects of phonics as they are encountered in passages or texts. I create a deliberate and sequential focus on building and using the relationship between sound and letter symbol to help my students decode new words.
In my career as a teacher of English Language I have always used a lot of educational technology. For example, I use the Interactive White Board effectively. ‘Prezi’ makes my presentations personal and unique. I use blogger which allows me interact with my students and create an opportunity for class discussions outside the classroom. My ability to manipulate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher applications has proved very useful in my English lessons.
At present I lecture Learning Skills. The subject is unique because it entails English for Academic purpose, ICT, Research & Communication Skills. It enhances my students’ essential Study Skills needed to cope well, academically in a Western University. As this subject does not have a strict curriculum, it gives me the opportunity to be creative and innovative in teaching.
To be outstanding teacher, I know I need to go beyond just teaching. I therefore engage in a lot of self development programmes, and appraisals I endeavour to learn new method and approaches that facilitate good teaching in my subject area. I also make an effective use of feedbacks from my superiors and students. Every day I put more and more effort to becoming an outstanding teacher indeed. The experience to which I expose my students inculcate in them an enviable change of behaviour.
