About Wendy

I have been an English teacher for almost 30 years and have taught across all age ranges within Secondary School and all ability levels. I have an Honours Degree in English Literature from Loughborough University and a PGCE from Oxford University. My teaching posts have included comprehensive schools, grammar schools and an overseas school, and my most recent post was 14 years in one of Oxford's leading independent schools. I have tutored at various points throughout my career and enjoy the one-to-one nature of tuition where I can focus on the needs of a particular individual. I have prepared students for entrance exams, and for GCSE English Language and English Literature following the specification for Edexcel and AQA examination boards. I have also trained as a crisis volunteer, a Samaritan and have undertaken a range of counselling courses and so am well-placed to support students who may be lacking in self-confidence and maybe need a greater level of encouragement. I have DBS clearance.

About the lesson

I am a warm and friendly teacher with a sense of humour and am able to build a good rapport and a level of trust with my students. The importance of helping a student build their skills and strengths is paramount whilst at the same time engendering a feeling of enjoyment of the subject. The requirements of the examination board will shape what needs to be covered but the learning style of the student will also dictate the way in which material is delivered. I believe it is important that students develop a degree of confidence and self-belief and I support and encourage them to approach the demands of the subject in a positive way. Enjoyment and skill-building should be able to co-exist, and it is to be hoped that my students gain a developing level of academic achievement within the context of engaging lessons.

£40 per hour, including travel costs of up to 10 miles. An additional £5 will be charged for distances beyond 10 miles from Islip
