About May

After graduating from the English literature program in a normal university in China in 2000, I started teaching English reading in a university in China. A few years after becoming a university teacher, I felt the need to improve myself and to go out to see the world. So I went to pursue my Master's in a university in New Zealand. I got my Master's in Education in 2005. Then I went back to teach at the same university until I moved to Canada in 2017, where as a newcomer, I first worked as a customer service representative then I taught English at an immigration service office. Then I stopped working during Covid. Now I want to come back to work as a teacher again since teaching has always been my passion.

My English lessons are pretty pragmatic. Basically, I plan my lessons according to student needs. I believe in student-centered curricula and I'm enthusiastic about achieving something together with the student via teaching lessons. My lesson plans are always strategy oriented. For example, if I want my adult students to grasp the gist of a piece of reading in a short time, I may show them how to get the main idea of an article by using some reading techniques such as skimming and scanning. I may demonstrate this by using some articles that are no harder than their current reading level, then tell them what today's reading is about and I'll set a timer and give them a similar article to read. I may observe the students' reaction during this time and give some diagnostic advice at the end of the lesson. And I will sum up the content of the lesson and assign some homework. In a word, I always make sure my lessons are complete and useful for my students. I'm a really responsible teacher and I feel bad if I didn't reach the goal of a certain lesson. I would do some rectification asap. So if students choose me, they should trust my ability and personality.
