About Bertie
I fell in love with piano at the age of four, when my first pieces were just a handful of notes on my sister's small electronic keyboard. I took lessons throughout school and at the age of nine I was accepted into Yorkshire Young Musicians, an all-day Sunday classical music school that operates inside Leeds College of Music. In 2016 I left to persue more jazz-orienteted and less exam-heavy learning and found my way to York Music Forum (YMF). In 2018 the Jazz Orchestra reached the final of Music For Youth, which resulted in a performance at London's Royal Albert Hall, an achievement we repeated in 2022. Having started teaching piano, music theory and composition full-time throughout 2021 I have gained over 200 hours of 1-to-1 teaching experience and guided numerous students through formal music exams. Besides studying at Newcastle University, I currently also play piano professionally for Bettys Tearooms in York.

I have a passion for music theory and will prioritise inspiring that passion in my students by making lessons as fun and interactive as possible, with contextual exercises to keep my students fully engaged. I am experienced in structuring lessons around the ABRSM music theory exercise books but I'm equally happy to follow a more free-flowing approach according to the student's learning styles and musical passions. In terms of composition, I will support and encourage my student's original ideas whilst offering ideas and basic musical concepts needed to take their piano compositions to the next level, often taking examples from famous pieces as a starting point, be they classical, jazz, pop or rock.
