About Tami
I have loved teaching Chicago public high school students as well as adults in college credit classes at Chicago City Colleges. For several years I've had students who speak 12 different languages in one class. I studied French in a traditional way for four years in high school, but in college, learned Swedish by total immersion, which is enormously different. These experiences taught me the strengths of each method, which informs my teaching. My M.A. is in Linguistics/TESOL.

I am a creative ESL teacher who evaluates the language skills of students, elicits their interests and career goals, and presents relevant lessons that effectively target their language accuracy and fluency needs. To learn a language, you must use it, not just understand it conceptually, so students must be active learners. Students will work on receptive skills -- listening & reading, and productive skills -- speaking & writing. I provide lessons that target and elicit, for example, the verb tense/aspect that a student needs help with. I am flexible and meet students at their ability level. Their own writing and speaking tells me where I have to take them next in the lesson, not the next chapter in a book.
