About Richard
I have been lecturing in Philosophy for the last 25 years. I have taught ethics to medical students, IT graduates; and ethics and political theory to undergraduate and graduate philosophy students. I find teaching ethics immensely rewarding. This is especially the case when students report that I have enabled an enhanced or more nuanced understanding of a particular topic, often a topic that can have a significant impact on people's lives.
Before becoming a lecturer, I was a graduate student at the University of Oxford (B.Phil) and Keele University (PhD). I have written about many issues in applied ethics, including disability, social deprivation, genetic technologies, assisted death and, most recently, menopause. I have also served as a government adviser on ethical issues and I am currently on the advisory panel of a national charity.
Beyond academic life, I have a love of landscape, music, art and cricket. I enjoy being in nature as much as possible, especially by the sea.

I am an experienced and enthusiastic university lecturer in philosophy, specialising in ethics and political theory. I am passionate about making complex concepts both understandable and relatable, which enhances student engagement and success with their subject.
I have been teaching Philosophy to undergraduate and graduate students for over 25 years at the University of Oxford, Keele University and the University of Galway. This has ranged from one-to-one tutorials through to large lecture theatres of 300 or more. I have also supervised many undergraduate dissertations, MA theses and PhDs. As well as Philosophy students, I have introduced ethics to a range of disciplines, including Medicine, IT and Law. I also have extensive experience of delivering lectures and tutorials online, with consistently excellent student feedback. I offer online tutoring to Philosophy undergraduates and graduates, students of other disciplines who need to specialise in ethics; and, more generally, anyone who is developing or would like to develop an interest in philosophical ethics. Indeed, sometimes people simply find themselves at a crossroads in life, where talking to a trained philosopher can be enormously helpful.
I have a Higher Education Teaching Award from the Staff and Educational Development Association and I recently won the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence for the College of Arts at the University of Galway.
I take pride in my clear, informal and accessible teaching style, making often complex subjects comprehensible and personally relevant to students. I find that the use of everyday real-world examples, along with humour where appropriate, enhances student understanding, recall and attainment.
I offer a free initial consultation, to make sure that I am a good fit for your individual needs.

Richard is a wonderful teacher. He supervised my PhD, and taught me during both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Learning with Richard is always fun. He makes difficult concepts accessible, and helps you to realise that you know more than you think you know! He is careful and critical, and consistently encouraged me to build connections between theory and practice. I hope I get to work with him again in the future.
Richard was my MA advisor at Galway. He was a warm, thoughtful and encouraging teacher with tremendous knowledge about a range of philosophical topics, including justice, freedom, ethics and disability studies. I recommend him strongly as a teacher and/or advisor!
I know Richard well as a colleague and teacher of philosophy over many years. One of Richard's greatest strengths as a teacher is his ability to make ethics both accessible and engaging for a wide range of learners. He skilfully connects philosophical and ethical theories to everyday experiences, helping students develop a deeper understanding of how ethical principles inform personal, professional, and societal decisions. He is an award-winning teacher whose enthusiastic and approachable teaching style makes the learning process both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating.
I’ve been colleagues with Richard since 2019. He inspires students to apply what they’ve learned and makes ideas accessible and exciting.
