About Joseph
I'm a composer and music educator with a warm, supportive approach to teaching composition and music theory. I’ve worked with students of all ages and abilities, helping them build confidence, develop their creativity, and strengthen their understanding of music—whether they're just starting out or looking to take their skills further. As a composer, my work has been performed by leading UK ensembles and featured at festivals across Europe.
I have experience writing for a wide range of settings, from solo instruments to large ensemble, and my approach draws on both classical and contemporary traditions. I offer tailored support for GCSE and A Level composition, ABRSM music theory (all grades), and free composition—whether you're preparing a portfolio for conservatoire, developing your own musical voice, or simply composing for the joy of it.
Alongside my teaching, I’m currently completing doctoral research at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, which gives me a broad and thoughtful perspective on how music works and how we experience it. Lessons are flexible and adapted to your needs, with a focus on curiosity, creativity, and clear musical understanding. Whether you want to pass an exam, write your first piece, or take your music in a new direction, I’d be happy to help you get there.

Lessons are tailored to suit each student's goals, interests, and level of experience. Whether you're preparing for GCSE or A Level composition coursework, working through ABRSM theory grades, or exploring composition for personal or professional development, I aim to create a clear, engaging, and encouraging environment. For GCSE and A Level students, I provide structured support with coursework development, including idea generation, score presentation, and commentary writing, all aligned with the exam board requirements.
For those working on ABRSM theory, I offer a methodical, confidence-building approach that focuses on understanding the underlying logic of music, rather than just memorising rules—ideal for students preparing for Grades 1–8.
For free composition, whether for conservatoire applications or simply for enjoyment, lessons are more exploratory, supporting you in developing your own musical voice through feedback, score work, and listening suggestions. I'm comfortable working across a range of styles, from classical to more experimental or hybrid approaches. I usually work with students online, using screen sharing and score-marking tools to make the experience interactive and hands-on. Lessons can be weekly, occasional, or tailored to specific deadlines.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Joseph has been teaching my 12-year-old son composition for the past year, and I honestly couldn’t recommend him more highly. From the very first lesson, he was patient, enthusiastic, and clearly incredibly knowledgeable about music.
He has this amazing ability to explain things in a way that’s both clear and engaging, even when the concepts are complex. My son always comes away from lessons full of ideas and excited to compose. It’s been wonderful to watch his confidence and creativity grow – so much so that he’s now seriously thinking about a future in music, something we never expected at this stage!
Joseph is everything you’d hope for in a tutor: kind, encouraging, professional, and totally dedicated to his students’ progress.Joseph is an experienced and talented composer who had provided teaching to various age groups successfully.
