About Jeff

I am an experienced educator with over six years in education, including three years as a classroom teacher and three years as a substitute teacher across multiple grade levels. Teaching is my fifth career, following work in technology, media, and design, which gives me a broad perspective on problem-solving, communication, and real-world application of academic skills. I currently specialize in tutoring students in grades 3–8 in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. I focus on helping students build strong foundations, think critically, and gain confidence in their abilities. My approach is structured, patient, and adaptable, allowing me to meet students where they are while steadily moving them forward. I place a strong emphasis on professionalism, clear communication, and consistency. Families can expect purposeful lessons, thoughtful feedback, and instruction grounded in both classroom experience and proven teaching practices. My goal is to help students not only improve academically, but also develop confidence, independence, and a positive relationship with learning.

Teaching Philosophy

My approach to tutoring is student-centered, thoughtful, and focused on understanding rather than shortcuts. I work to help students feel comfortable thinking out loud, asking questions, and making mistakes without pressure. The goal is not just correct answers, but confidence, clarity, and skills students can use independently in and out of the classroom.

Teaching Methods

I use a blend of inquiry-based learning, clear modeling, and guided practice. Lessons often begin with questions or patterns to build conceptual understanding before moving into procedures. When a student needs direct instruction, I break concepts into manageable steps using visuals, examples, and discussion. I also incorporate metacognitive strategies so students learn how to approach problems and monitor their own thinking.

Typical Lesson Structure

Each session begins with a short check-in and review to assess understanding and mindset. We then focus on a targeted skill or concept through guided instruction and practice, adjusting pace and strategy as needed. Lessons close with reflection, where students explain what they learned and identify next steps. Sessions are structured but flexible, allowing instruction to adapt in real time.

What Sets Me Apart

I bring classroom experience across multiple grade levels along with a background in technology and creative problem-solving. This allows me to explain concepts in multiple ways and connect learning to real-world thinking. I also design engaging challenges and learning games when appropriate, while keeping expectations clear and rigorous. Building student confidence and independence is a core focus of my work.

Who I Work With

I tutor students in grades 3–8 in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. My lessons support students who need extra help, students who are capable but disengaged, and students who benefit from structured, patient instruction. I also have experience supporting English learners and students with diverse learning needs.
