About Mattie

I have been tutoring for almost five years now and have really enjoyed working closely with students to help them improve where they need it. With younger students, I believe the most important thing is getting them excited and engaged in their subject. For example, when tutoring Destiny, an 8 year old primary school student who was struggling at school with reading and writing, I tried to think of creative ways to engage him, such as asking him to make a short comic strip summarising the book he had read to ensure he understood the story. By the end of our sessions his word recognition had improved massively as had his ability to sound out more difficult words. Crucially, he became much more enthusiastic about reading and writing which was great to see!

I also have a lot of experience tutoring older students studying both GCSE and A-level. For my most recent GCSE student, I she said she found focusing on close language analysis particularly helpful as well as essay planning and exam technique. She made collections of quotes from her main texts on important characters and themes and we looked together at the significance of these quotes and how you could write about them in essays. She went from getting D's in her mocks to achieving a comfortable B in her exam which she was very proud of!

About the lesson

I try to tailor my tuition to the student and their needs. For older students (GCSE and A-level) I mainly focus on exam techniques and essay planning. I also find it is helpful to cover revision techniques and strategies, especially for students approaching exams.

For younger students I tend to focus on engaging them in their subject, going over the areas they find difficult at a pace that suits them. For all students I like to set out our aims for the session at the beginning, and look at how well we have achieved this at the end, as well as briefly running over what we have covered.
