About Sebastian
I am an active HEMA competitor on the UK tournament circuit, currently rated in the top 50 in the UK in sabre, top 40 in longsword, and top 20 in rapier. I have been doing HEMA for 5 years, instructing for 4 years, and competing for 3 years. Before that, I trained and instructed in traditional (WTF) taekwondo for 12 years and achieved the rank of 1st Dan.
Outside of HEMA, I work as a professional historian and university lecturer specialising in the military history of the early modern world.

My teaching methodology in HEMA is informed by my professional life as a historian and university lecturer. I teach students in the classroom nearly every day, and my fencing practice is very much an extension of that. I will work with your strengths in a clear and empathetic way to help you improve your game, whether you want to learn the basics or to refine your skills for competition.
Lessons will last from 30 to 60 minutes depending on your needs. I can review footage and analyse it with you; provide detailed feedback of what you are doing well and where you could improve; help you build and implement a training programme; or I can coach you through the basics if you want to learn something completely new.
