About Rory

I am a First Class MMath graduate from the University of Exeter, currently working in statistics/software development. I also attended Exeter Maths School and have always had a passion for mathematics, but my own educational journey has not been without challenges. As someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia, I understand first-hand that academic success is not always a straightforward path and that different students learn in different ways.

One of the reasons I enjoy tutoring is that I genuinely find it rewarding to help students overcome barriers and achieve things they did not think were possible. Whether that means helping a student secure a top grade or supporting someone towards a pass they never believed they could achieve, I am highly invested in their success. I particularly enjoy working with young people and building their confidence, resilience, and belief in their own abilities.

I understand that education is a different experience for everyone. Some students need challenge and extension, while others need support rebuilding confidence after finding mathematics difficult. I enjoy adapting my approach to suit each individual and take pride in creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their understanding.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is student-led, as I believe that every student learns differently and there is no single method that works for everyone. As someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia, I have first-hand experience of neurodiversity and understand the importance of adapting explanations and learning strategies to suit different ways of thinking. Some students benefit from a structured programme in which we work systematically through the syllabus, while others prefer a more flexible approach, bringing questions or topics they have found challenging during the week.

I have experience working with students across a wide range of abilities, from highly gifted mathematicians seeking additional challenge to those who find mathematics difficult and lack confidence in the subject. Having attended Exeter Maths School myself, I understand the needs of students aiming for top academic performance, while also recognising the barriers that can make mathematics feel inaccessible. My focus is on developing genuine understanding and problem-solving skills rather than memorisation alone. I also place a strong emphasis on building students' resilience, confidence, and self-belief in mathematics, as these are often just as important as subject knowledge in achieving long-term success. My aim is to create a supportive environment in which students can build confidence, make meaningful progress, and achieve their individual goals.
