About Niko

Following the footsteps of my father and grandmother, I come from a long line of music teachers! Teaching children is where I thrive, and the bulk of my students have been between the ages of 5-12. My 6 plus years as an ECE teacher, and embracing the Reggio Emilia philosophy have aided me greatly in my ability to connect and teach kids. During my music studies at Berklee College of Music, I began to shift my focus from saxophone to piano and composition. Later on in life, with a focus on teaching piano to children I opened up my own private piano/composition teaching practice. I'm experienced in crafting lesson plans around beginner to intermediate levels on piano, as well as being able to incorporate harmony, ear training, improvisation and composition, when students have interests in these. My broad range of musical knowledge and styles, as well as experience in the worlds of drumming, Hip Hop and jazz music, aid me in offering a wide array of potential bridges for students to grasp musical concepts and hone and improve their abilities. With the youth I emphasize making the lessons as engaging as I can, to hold on to their interest as a primary and constant goal. I look forward to learning together!

About the lesson

I offer piano lessons to children, ages 5 and older. I have tried to take the best of what the important teachers and mentors have offered to me as a student. Our lessons will be centered around your goals, musically, but I will make sure to offer my students the best ways forward for their learning. We can co-create the process together. I have a deep respect for the interests and experience that each student brings to our lessons - and I try to honor these while also remembering what my job is as the one to keep us on a track of learning and improving. I aim for a balance between building that bridge to enjoying music and learning but also challenging students to go out of their comfort zone too. Especially with older students, I try to find the right kind of pushes forward that keep our progress up without adding too many pressures that ultimately harm the learning process.

As a tutor, I lean into my background experience in lesson-planning and utilizing short periods of time to maximize our time together. Learning what works and doesn't work for each student is a big part of my process. My background in adapting to each student as well as my songwriting and college studies around English and writing are part of my foundation as a tutor. I feel most comfortable offering tutoring in the areas of English, writing, creative writing and the liberal arts in general
