About Rachel

I provide online lessons for complete beginners. I have over 6 year’s experience as a tutor. My style is patient and flexible. I have taught people of various ages and am happy to work our lessons around your interests. I am passionate about making lessons fun. We choose the style or piece you want to play together. I've taught piano via everything from Schumann to High School Musical.

I will begin one hand at a time, covering with hand placement and understanding the keys. I also teach music reading and basic musical theory, for example, the lengths of notes and symbols in the stave and what that means for your playing. I am a patient teacher who will work at the pace of the individual.

My lessons are structured but informal. I do not put students through exams or tests. This means we are free to explore any piece or genre of music that appeals to you. Whether you're interested in jazz, musical theatre, classical, or music from the movies I am happy to teach via your interests.

Each lesson has a structure. After getting through the basics a lesson will typically begin with some scales, a sight reading exercise, and then a focus on 2-3 pieces. This structure works well via zoom or in person.

I have a grade 6 piano ABRSM qualification and grade 5 distinction in musical theory. I also have a higher in music. I began learning musical theory and reading sheet music at a young age. I began learning piano in high school and quickly passed through each grade. I was taught to a high standard and am very passionate about music. I have experience as a teaching assistant in music and social sciences departments and am in a caring role with children with autism in primary schools and at home. I hold a PVG Scotland qualification.

I am an enthusiastic and patient teacher who has a passion for the subject matter and am excited to pass on my musical knowledge!

About the lesson

After we've covered the basics, our lessons take on more of a structure. Usually, a lesson will begin with some scale practice followed by a quick sight reading exercise. Then we can focus on your chosen pieces.
