About Frances
I first became interested in tutoring whilst at Oxford University, as a source of extra income, but soon realised that working with students to help them understand scientific concepts was something I loved. Following university, I completed the Teach First Leadership Development Programme, allowing me to hone my teaching skills in the classroom and develop my awareness of the secondary school curriculum. I now teach at a high-performing free school in Feltham where my timetable is comprised of GCSE and A-level Chemistry. My current role is head of Phase 3, which means that I am responsible for the pastoral care of years 6, 7 and 8. I am now in my 6th year of teaching in the UK. I trained through the Teach First Leadership development pathway and had my first job in a small secondary school in the North East of England. On completion of this 2-year programme, I took a hiatus from teaching to work for an ed tech start-up in Manchester. It was in Manchester that I restarted tutoring; a decision which ultimately led me back to the classroom a year later. When I returned to the classroom it was as Head of the Science department. I continued in that role for a year before moving to London to start an exciting new role in a pastoral capacity. At my current school, I have been teaching the new AQA specifications at both GCSE and A-level, specialising in Chemistry over other science subjects. My teaching approach is informed by current research in education and is underpinned by a few fundamental principles: - knowledge is essential to success - recalling and testing that knowledge in spaced intervals increases the ability of students to remember information - practice and feedback are essential for students to master the subject In lessons I like to explain and model new concepts, allow students to practise with guidance and then independence to gain confidence. Students will be expected to complete work between lessons to consolidate what we have covered and convert each lesson into long-term memory. Moving closer to exams, there would be a large focus on the completion of a wide range of questions to test the limits of students' understanding and ensure they are ready for the tests. Frances was a key member of our Science Department for 2 years. Her excellent subject knowledge combined with her warm, friendly nature led to excellent results for her students.
Frances was a valued and dedicated member of the team during her time here. She taught across the sciences up to and including GCSE with students of target grades of A*-C. During her time with us she proved to be a very good teacher who was comfortable working with groups of all abilities. Her individual work was outstanding.
During her time at Thornaby Academy, Frances was an engaging and passionate teacher of science. Not only is her subject knowledge extensive, she is also a natural teacher whose enthusiasm and innovative style meant her students understood the subject with increased energy and enjoyment. These qualities allowed Frances to engage the attention and progress of her classes. However, where she truly excelled was catering for the individual needs of her students. She would consistently go out of her way to provide one-on-one support to students who needed extra help. All of her students valued her support and commitment to their learning, along with her warm and welcoming persona.
