About Kirsten
Hi! I’m a secondary school teacher who absolutely loves what I do.
I actually come from a family of teachers — both of my parents are teachers — and for years I was told that I would make a good teacher myself. However, I didn’t commit to teaching until a few years ago. Looking back, I’m so glad I eventually took the leap because I genuinely love my job and couldn’t imagine doing anything else!
I’m naturally a very enthusiastic and energetic person, and I bring that into my lessons. My students often describe me as passionate, enthusiastic and fun, and I have a great sense of humour and love to laugh. I’m definitely not the type of teacher who can sit still for very long! I like to keep lessons active, engaging and full of energy, and I put a lot of personality into what I do.
I care deeply about the young people I teach and get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing a student suddenly understand something they had been struggling with, gain confidence or achieve something they didn’t think they could. I want my students to enjoy learning while also pushing themselves to reach their full potential.
I’m particularly passionate about critical thinking. I love encouraging students to question things, challenge ideas, explain their reasoning and develop their own arguments rather than simply memorising information.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing golf, reading, spending time with my friends and looking after my mum’s dog. I’m a very sociable person and I think that comes across in my teaching too.
Ultimately, I wanted to become a teacher because I wanted a job where I could make a genuine difference to young people — and after a slightly longer journey into teaching than expected, I can honestly say I absolutely love it!

I am a dual-qualified secondary school teacher currently teaching both Modern Studies and Psychology. I have a degree in Psychology and extensive experience teaching both subjects across National 5 and Higher level. I have also worked as an SQA marker, giving me valuable insight into the assessment process and what is required to achieve success in SQA examinations.
My approach to tutoring is friendly, supportive and completely tailored to each pupil. I begin by identifying their strengths, areas for development and individual goals, before planning lessons around what they need most. As I currently teach these subjects, I have an up-to-date understanding of the Scottish curriculum, SQA course requirements and the skills pupils need to perform well in their exams.
I use a range of teaching techniques, including clear explanations, questioning, discussion, exam-style questions, essay planning, model answers, revision activities and regular feedback. I place particular emphasis on exam technique, helping pupils understand not only the content but also how to structure answers, apply their knowledge and respond effectively to different types of SQA questions.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes and take place online. I provide personalised resources and activities where appropriate and adapt the pace and content of each lesson to suit the individual pupil.
I offer tuition primarily to pupils studying National 5 and Higher Modern Studies or Psychology, including pupils preparing for prelims and final examinations, as well as those who simply want to improve their understanding, confidence and overall performance.
My combination of current classroom experience, dual teaching qualifications, a Psychology degree and experience marking for the SQA allows me to provide tuition that is closely aligned with what pupils are expected to know and demonstrate in their assessments.
