About Rachel
I am a Cambridge graduate and have been teaching for 28 years, with History as my main passion. I teach because I love the moment when young people “get it” — when a subject starts to make sense and becomes alive to them.
I have extensive experience teaching GCSE and A-level students, including Edexcel and OCR courses, and I am an OCR GCSE examiner. I specialise in helping students develop the knowledge, confidence and exam skills needed to succeed, particularly in remembering key content, constructing strong arguments and writing effective answers.
I also teach A-level Economics and have experience supporting students with different academic strengths and challenges. My wider experience in Politics, Economics and Psychology allows me to help students make connections between subjects and develop deeper understanding.
Having led UCAS preparation at my school for many years, I have a clear insight into the skills and expectations needed for university applications.
I also enjoy supporting younger learners through 11+ preparation, helping them build confidence in English, reasoning, problem-solving and primary maths skills.

I currently teach A-level Economics and History and have extensive experience helping students prepare for GCSE and A-level examinations.
My approach is based on understanding each student's starting point and then building the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to make progress. I focus not only on learning content, but on teaching students how to think, solve problems and produce high-quality answers.
For younger students preparing for the 11+, I use a structured and encouraging approach, developing skills in English comprehension, vocabulary, reasoning, problem-solving and primary maths. I aim to make preparation challenging but enjoyable, helping children become confident and independent learners.
For GCSE and A-level students, I specialise in exam technique, essay writing, developing arguments and understanding what examiners are looking for. Many students know the material but need support turning their knowledge into stronger answers — this is an area where my classroom experience is particularly valuable.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate, particularly for exam preparation. Each lesson is tailored to the individual student, with a focus on clear explanations, practice, feedback and measurable progress.
Ultimately I aim to help students discover that subjects they find difficult can become manageable and rewarding.
