About Sam
I'm a professional orchestral cellist, teacher, composer, and researcher, giving me a good practical understanding of music from many angles. I have been teaching cello, as well as music more widely, for over 5 years, privately as well as through agencies and at the Oxford Cello School. I have also covered for teachers at Junior Royal Academy of Music, teaching Advanced Musicianship and Aural skills. I have worked as a research assistant for the AHRC-funded project on Music, Migration and Mobility, based at the Royal College of Music, researching and giving talks on the legacy of musicians who migrated to the UK from Nazi-ruled Europe. I was awarded an MMus with Distinction in Cello Performance from the Royal College of Music, and I have a first-class academic music degree from the University of Cambridge, including consistently high marks in analysis and tonal skills. This means I can fully understand and explain the concepts I am teaching, rather than simply reading from an exam syllabus. I am also available to teach other areas of music, including music theory, aural skills, and cello.

I am currently have space to work with a small number of new students based in North, West or Central London, or for online sessions.
I am genuinely enthusiastic about music theory, because of how much I think it can help us understand the music we play and listen to.
I am happy to teach towards ABRSM grade exams, up to and including grade 8, but would also be happy teaching other aspects of music theory that are beyond the scope of the exams. I'm also available to teach aural skills, as well as GCSE and A-level music, and I can help with preparation for university entrance exams or interviews, especially Oxbridge. My approach is flexible and led by the needs of the student, but in general I teach for understanding, as I think it is a far more effective way of learning about music than simply rote-learning mark schemes, which tends to be just frustrating and confusing.
I'm patient, extremely passionate about music, and I enjoy explaining things! I always take care to build a personal relationship with each individual and create a calm, positive environment where my students can discuss, explore, make mistakes and think for themselves.
I have an up-to-date enhanced DBS check.
