About Tesia

With over 25 years of teaching experience and 17 years as a Certified Working Artist for Golden Artist Colors, I have some serious chops when it comes to painting. I'm tooting my own horn here but the hundreds of students that I've taught will back me up. I have a deep understanding of acrylic paint combined with a soulful approach to being an artist. It's a win-win.

I'm a paint geek. I love all things painting. The history, the artists, the materials, the gossip. My brain is on 24/7 with art history and paint. I have seriously blown the mind of many of my students when I pull artists out of thin air as an example of what they should be doing or looking at or thinking about.

I love to teach! It keeps me fresh in my own work. After all, if I'm talking about composition and color with my students, it's going to be right in the forefront of my brain when I get to my own work.

Students inspire me. I've been brought to tears on more than one occasion by witnessing a student's "aha" moment - that moment when they get it. And I'm standing right there. It's pure bliss.

When I was in graduate school one of my advisors asked me to teach a class in the community. I was hesitant at first but after a week I was hooked. I love the interaction with students.

I have a BFA in painting and sculpture from the Academy of Art in San Francisco and a Masters of Fine Art from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley.  Additionally, I have been a Certified Working Artist for Golden Artist Colors for over 17 years.  I have had extensive technical training in all aspects of acrylic paint manufacturing and use.

Typically I will have a short phone meeting or Skype meeting with a potential student to see if we are a good fit. Then I email them a short questionnaire that narrows down where they would like to focus; what type of work; whether they're a beginner or more experienced and so on; what type of products they would like to work with in my studio, etc.

The student can choose to do a one day private lesson with me or, if there is a spot open, join one of my weekly classes in the studio. Tuesday nights from 6:30-9:30 currently has openings.

I also offer online classes that are very reasonable, both live and pre-recorded.

I've worked with all ranges of students from seniors to children, beginners to advanced. I especially like working with beginning painters. It's a real joy to see them discover their "voice" and learn to use new materials.

If you are a beginner, find an artist you admire or whose work you want to emulate and ask the potential teacher if she/he can help you do that. It's best to have an idea of what you want to accomplish going in, so that the teacher can narrow the focus a bit. There is so much you could possibly do that you may end up not doing much at all if you don't have a plan.

Secondly, don't be afraid of making mistakes. Exploration involves making mistakes and some of the best work comes from incorporating mistakes into your work.

Thirdly, don't expect miracles in an afternoon. Ask your teacher to give you "homework" to build on the time you've spent together. This will give you the groundwork to continue your work on your own and get your skills buit up.

And don't forget to have fun!!!

As I sit here typing this, I am looking out the window over the rolling green hills of New Berlin, NY. I was "gifted" a two week artist in residence at the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation by Golden Artist Colors. As a longtime Working Artist for the company, they generously gave me this time as a working retreat. To say I'm fond of this event is an understatement! It's been heavenly!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I want to accomplish? Do I want to understand the painting materials more or do I want to make paintings without regard to what materials I use (both are valid).

How can I describe the intention I have in one word? In other words, do you want your paintings to be energetic? moody? sad? happy? meditative? If you can describe the general feeling you would like to accomplish, it goes a long way to helping your teacher guide you in the painting.

A one day private lesson with me is $749.00. That covers up to two individuals in my studio for six hours. I provide all of the paint and gels, etc. as well as some surfaces (canvas board, paper). The student provides their own canvas or other surfaces as well as any special items they need for a particular project.

Weekly classes in my studio are $375.00 for ten weeks. Classes start quarterly. Spots fill up fast so advance registration is required.
