About Miranda

Tutoring should be more than a Q & A session, it should be interactive! I started peer instructing students when I WAS a student getting my bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, so I know that students only retain 10% of information if it is lectured to them first hand. I specialize in creating interactive games and scenarios in which students see the material they are learning in action and thus absorb it.

The "light bulb moment". When the look on a student's face implies that it finally clicked - that is what I live for as a tutor. Every student learns differently and reading about learning styles and teaching theory is a guilty pleasure of mine. Every student of mine gets individual attention and I will work tirelessly until we reach the ligh tbulb moment!

My bachelor's degree is in Marine Biology and Enviromental Science, which I earned from Steton University - a small private school in central Florida. I took every science class my high school offered, including AP classes, and when I went to college, I began tutoring students in introductory biology classes in my second year, and carried on tutoring til the day I graduated. My mentoring professor was very progressive in her teaching style; she gave very few lectures since she believed students could read their textbooks at home and class time should be used for applying what they had already read. I whole-heartedly took on this method and could see the results when my students tested zip codes higher than students in other classes. The secret is interactive studying and application of knowledge. What I do for students is create activities and games that enable students to see how what they are learning works in action. Think of it this way - if you buy a piece of furniture from IKEA, some assemly required, you can read the instruction manual a million times, but unless you get to touch the pieces and see how and why certain ones do not belong together, all you have done is practiced reading.

About the lesson

Tutoring with me can be as personal or as impersonal as students wish, however, I recommend face-to-face time as interactive learning and study techniques are my specialty. First, let me know if you are looking for a long term tutoring contract (ie for a whole semester or year) or help on a specific project or topic. Next, I will need a syllabus, course schedule, or a project or topic description as is appropriate. If what you need falls under the umbrella of my expertise, then away we go! If I think there is a more specialized tutor out there that is better suited for you, I will let you know at this time.

I have worked with middle school, high school and college level students in a wide range of science topics, in both the American and British cirriculum structures.
