About Kathryn
Teaching is my passion. I've been teaching and tutoring college and K-12 students for 25 years, primarily in science. If you have been searching for a qualified and caring tutor for yourself or your child, look no further!
Learning isn't just about memorizing. My students focus on understanding concepts and making deeper connections.
Tutoring can increase critical thinking skills, increase reading ability, reduce test anxiety, and build self-confidence. Every learner is unique, and we'll build a customized learning plan to best meet your needs.
I can help with labs, quizzes, tests, and high-stakes exams, as well as general study skills.
I love connecting science to a subject that you are already passionate about... and I love making learning fun!
My first experience with teaching happened almost by accident. As an undergraduate student, I landed a job as an animal handler at a zoo. Part of that job was giving live presentations to large audiences. Through that experience I discovered I had a passion for teaching about the natural world, and I have never looked back!
I have a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction and an Education Specialist (EdS) degree in Science Education. I earned my Masters in Education, and my Bachelors in Zoology.
Over the years I've had the privilege of teaching in many environments, including high schools (public and private), at the university level, and at some nature centers and zoos. I've also volunteered as a science fair judge, a STEM research mentor, an educator with the Audubon Society, and a Planting Science mentor.
I have decided not to pursue FL public school licensing at this time but I'm currently certified to teach Biology to grades 5-12 in Massachusetts.

I like to begin by outlining your long-term goals for tutoring, what areas you're struggling with, and how I can best help you. If necessary, we can do some initial placement evaluations.
Each session will be different depending on what's happening in your course, whether its reviewing new concepts and terms, exam prep, or lab investigations. In addition, we'll spend time improving your general study skills. If needed we'll work on techniques for higher-stakes tests, such as state-mandated science exams or pre-college exams.
I have worked with students of all ages, from toddlers to adults, of many skill levels and abilities. I am familiar with accommodations for students who have special learning situations, and with challenging highly gifted students. The majority of my tutoring students have been in high school or college and I especially enjoy working with older teens and adults.
Before you start searching, think about what you need from your tutor. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. If the first person you choose doesn't seem like a good fit for you, don't feel badly - let them go and keep looking.
A good tutor understands how important it is for you to feel comfortable and successful. Your education is too important to waste time (and money) on a tutor who isn't giving you what you need!
I briefly tutored a young man who spent too much time on AP Biology homework each night. After meeting with him, it was clear he was a conscientious student who understood Biology but needed assistance in critical reading. In his worry that he would miss something vital, he was simply copying every word from his text into his notes.
We met for several weeks and were able to reduce his homework burden significantly with some simple techniques. In less than two months he admitted he didn't need my help anymore. I was thrilled! For a tutor, there is no better compliment, and no better success than to work myself out of a job.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students may benefit from asking themselves:
- What do I expect to gain from having a tutor? What would make me consider my tutoring relationship a success?
- How much time do I spend on this subject each day/week? Am I comfortable with this amount of time?
- What am I best at in this subject? What parts of the class am I most comfortable with? Where do I struggle most?
- How well do I understand what is being taught?
- How do I feel about my performance on quizzes and tests? What am I best at on the tests in this subject? Where do I struggle most?
- What study habits and skills do I have right now? Am I comfortable with my current skills and habits?
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Dr. Wells did a fabulous job working with our daughter. A lot of tutors are very knowledgeable about the subject matter. It takes a unique tutor to be able to get that knowledge across to the student in an effective way. Dr. Wells has that ability. She makes the student feel comfortable and she has a way of relaxing the student so they are not intimidated by the material. This only enhances the learning. Can't say enough positive things about Dr. Wells. Our child would not be where they are today without her. Highly, highly recommended.
