About Cammi
Having graduated with a chemistry degree just a few years ago, I know the pains of trying to learn chemistry. I distinctly remember what it's like to be a student. However, I have also learned to break down the material into methodical ways that make it less of a mess!
I have always been obsessed with chemistry from a young age. A little crazy, yes, but it's genuinely fun and energizing for me. When I am able to direct this enthusiasm towards teaching others, there is nothing greater than watching someone else finally get to understand it too! I love helping others make the connections they need to better understand this complex area!
Lab assisting was my first, middle, and last college campus job. Yet I found during tutoring at MSU that I absolutely love working with students 1-on-1. When one of my students told me she hoped I would go on to teach someday, I knew I had to come back to it, especially after watching this student so wonderfully succeed.
I have a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Missouri State University and 23 credits towards a Masters degree in chemistry that was put on pause after joining a lab as a forensic chemist.
In college, I started lab assisting organic chemistry my sophomore year, then took on lab assisting biochemistry my junior year as well as started 1-on-1 tutoring through MSU. I also independently taught a biochemistry lab and general chemistry lab as a graduate assistant.

I always do a free 30 min consultation with students, in person or over Zoom, Skype, etc., so that we can discuss what they are hoping to get out of the tutoring and I can take notes on areas of focus. It is imperative that students tell me ahead of time the topics they want to cover so that I can prep with material breakdown and examples accordingly. During the consultation, we will discuss frequency and dates/times to set up for the future.
All of the students I have worked with have been college students. College-level chemistry really is what I do best. My students are dedicated to their work but need help making sense of their coursework. I am just as dedicated towards their success.
Experience in chemistry is important for a tutor, but being able to put yourself in students' shoes is more important. It's what allows a good tutor to anticipate their students' needs and break material down in a meaningful way. Don't just look for the person with the most impressive set of chemistry credentials - look for someone who seems like they'd be able to bring themselves down to the student level.
When I was hired as a forensic chemist, it was clear during my training that a lot of people didn't know why they were adding certain chemicals during certain parts of their work. I took it upon myself to break it down for everyone else and was eventually asked by my supervisor to present on "The Chemistry of Extractions" to our section. It was so fulfilling being able to teach in a way that directly applied to the work my coworkers and I were doing!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I need to be re-taught my material, or I am looking for help with practice problems?
Do I want the tutor for the whole course, or do I need them to just get me through a section I'm struggling?
What effort am I willing to put in to make the tutoring sessions most effective?
