About Elijah
One of my greatest joys is seeing a student find the perfect way to write and sing their ideas, emotions and experiences.
As a recording artist and songwriter for 15 years, I know the bliss and struggle of the creative process well. Through understanding your strengths, writing exercises, prompts and editing, my students often find their skill and excitement for crafting songs increase exponentially!
I am a graduate of the Forerunner Music Academy in Kansas City, MO with a Major in Songwriting. I am the main writer and singer of a rock/pop band called Familiar and freelance as a writer on other projects and commission songs.

My mother and grandmother had been piano teachers for 40+ years and I found myself drawn to the connection and experience of teaching as I watched them. Immediately after high school graduation, I began a career as a teacher assistant in an elementary & middle school context.
I took 4 years at Forerunner Music Academy to focus on Songwriting and also invest in my skill set as an educator through some pedagogy classes as well. After graduating, I was hired on as teaching staff in specifically the Songwriting department and conducted private lessons alongside my teaching schedule.
I've worked 5+ years in the education field both teaching and mentoring students and fellow musicians. I've also become actively involved in the Kansas City and local Hickory music scenes and have learned a great deal about both recorded and live song production.

My first priority is to get to know my student so I'll ask some easy questions about their history with songwriting, if they play any instruments (and what those instruments are), and what their goals are with writing songs.
Once we have a little info about those criteria, we're ready to start writing, learning and growing!
I've had students as young as 10 all the way to adults around their late 50's! I love the creatively and experience all ages can bring to the craft of songwriting.
I've worked with writers who didn't play instruments or were at the very beginning of their musical journey. I've also worked with very accomplished writers/musicians and co-written with them to help elevate their songs to a higher level.
My biggest piece of advice is to find a teacher who cares about you both as a human and creative. Songwriting is a deeply vulnerable and subjective activity which requires kindness and discernment when working with a mentor/teacher. When the student can trust the teacher opinion because the teacher cares for both the song and the writer, education can truly happen!
Recently, my band played a music festival in Topeka, KS and got to perform in front of about 300 people. It was so much fun seeing songs I had written in private find a context that brought so much joy and entertainment to the crowd.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would recommend compiling some of your past songs and think about the difficulties/hang ups you encountered while creating those songs.
I'd also think through whether songwriting is more of a hobby, career or personal passion.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
The freedom to create, coupled with enough parameters to know exactly where to start. The song prompts I was given by Elijah were perfect, because they taught me creativity with an objective. Elijah taught me that the best way to be creative was to find the perfect balance between objective and subjective, between abstract and concrete. If I could do this over again, I definitely would.
I loved working with Elijah because he helped me to complete unfinished songs by bringing an outside perspective and suggestions that elevated the songs. He challenges you and pushes you to create.
He is relatable, approachable, and very wise in his craft as a songwriter. Having him as a teacher was the best choice I could make in my career forward as an aspiring songwriter. I highly recommend working with Elijah as he is the real deal.
Elijah was super helpful and encouraging. He gives quality feedback and knows what he's talking about. He's really good at being kind and not crushing your spirit while also giving you the constructive criticism you need to improve.
Elijah is one of the best songwriter that I know and he is very generous with sharing his knowledge. He knows how to challenge you to write better and deliver it in a very practical, informative and fun way. I enjoyed the different prompts that he gave us as a class and I found myself exploring different ways of writings that I wouldn't do it if it's not encouraged by him!
