About Ethan

Hi! I'm Ethan!

Graduated summa cum laude with a bachelors in Cybersecurity from Columbia Basin College. I started tutoring as a student worker at my local college and learned that I have a knack for teaching programming concepts in a way that is easy to understand and pick up. I focus on compartmentalizing my lessons so that you get just what you need to understand the concept in front of you without drowning you in details. From there we grow on those concepts, filling in the details as we go. I like to use a combination of easy to understand metaphors and logical thought experiments to help illuminate and clarify difficult problems. I teach basic programming concepts, classes, functions, 'pythonic' statements, list comprehensions, data structures and algorithms.

Free concept to demonstrate my teaching style:

What is a function?

You actually already know what a function is! You do it all the time every day. When someone tells you 'take out the trash' that's a function! It's a set of smaller behaviors that make up a whole task. Stand up. Find trashcan. Take bag out of trash can. Find door. Open door. Take trash to outside trash can. Open trash can. Put trash inside trash can. But that takes forever to say, so instead we just say 'Take out the trash'. That, in essence, is what a function is.

I have 3 years of experience coding in Python for various freelance clients over the years, and have also made scripts and applications for the companies I've worked for. In addition, I've been in the IT field for over 6 years, two of which were in the Cybersecurity field.
