I work with Emily in a small group that meets weekly. There is ample time to read the material I have worked on, with critiquing from fellow group members as well as Emily. The environment is safe. Emily's technique is nurturing, but somehow she gets me to stretch, enabling me to go places I might have never dared to travel. Emily is passionate that her students should take that plunge into their creativity. Until we take that risk we are hobbled by that most grotesque adversary- the Inner Critic. For me, the door has been opened.

In her Book, "The Art of Fiction Writing", Emily states, "Creativity is active and passionate. Creativity is about doing and feeling." Emily, in her couching, gently prods me to delve into my memories and feelings and weave them into my stories. Without criticism, she asks simple questions, gently prods me to delve into my feelings, my memories, and weave them into my stories. Without criticism, she shepherds me into a tighter story that better expresses what I want to say. She beams as my characters fly high - literally and figuratively. I tell her, "You may not be a therapist, But working with you is definitely therapeutic."

Emily's coaching is instrumental developing my skills as a fiction writer. Having no background in the discipline, Emily helped me develop the skills, knowledge and ability to translate the story in my head. I am currently writing a novel. Before I worked with Emily I had no idea how to proceed-her coaching skills are exceptional. I continue working with Emily, attending her retreat for the second time in September and by telephone. I love her thoughtful critiques, careful suggestions and enthusiasm.

Emily is very attentive to the writers with whom she works. She reads/listens to our writing very carefully, both with an appreciative wholistic view and with keen insight into specific techniques/conventions. She provides both positive and constructive feedback in authentic ways. She is also able to relate her own experiences as a writer to her coaching at relevant times in appropriate ways.
