About Cindy

Our instructors build confidence in the student by being “on their team” from the beginning. We continually develop their skills, with a wealth of tips, repitition where necessary, always moving them forward. We are well-loved and referred to others by the students as the top school for driving lessons. By the time of the drive test, our students are familiar with the freeway and busy city driving, and pass their test easily, leaving parents with a feeling of confidence as they release their teen to drive off alone with their license.

After sending two of my daughters to driving schools, I wanted so badly to teach my third and fourth daughters myself, so I decided to apply for the job! I called the RIGHT school (Sunshine Driving School) and learned while training my third daughter!

I was trained in 2001 by Ken Cornelius of Sunshine Driving School, Ojai, CA in his 36th year of instructing students and other trainers. He has the best instruction model for beginners, those who have self-started, and adults from other countries as well. I went back to him for advanced training when I opened my own driving school in 2009. Since then, I have become a certified trainer of instructors as well. My favorite thing is to take someone that seems impossible to drive, and through patient and insightful instruction, produce a safe driver!

About the lesson

I give three 2-hour lessons. I sign the permit on the first lesson, and give tons of expert instruction in real-time driving that will make skilled driving easy for the students. Then after they practice what they have learned (for 10 hours with their parents), I usually give them a freeway lesson to a busy city, which expands their skills and confidence. The last last lesson (for the teen 6 hour requirement) is a pretest lesson with more instruction and tips to pass the drive test.

I have taught “The American Teenager” that already knows everything (!), respecting their knowledge, and coaxing them to learn that last tidbit, as well as the normal teen that thinks they know nothing, but surprises themselves with their ability to drive after my coaching, as well as college students, certain special needs students, adults from Asia, the Middle East, Mexico, Russia, India, etc. I have taught through interpreters—professional and family members.

Good driving instruction is when you are taught the skill before you are asked to perform it. A good learning atmosphere is when you feel safe, uncriticized, with strong coaching support. Come to your lesson expecting it to be fun and exciting!

I love the determination I have seen in two women with no knowledge of automobiles. One was a Chinese housewife with no one to practice with, whose ex-husband was taking her son away. Her attorney said she must get her drivers license to get him back, and she did! The other was from Russia, over 70 years of age with an alcoholic husband. Driving did not come easy, but for her own safety she learned and passed her drive test!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Will they be able to practice what they have learned? If they don’t have an adult to practice with, they will need additional lessons. Are they able to trust the instructor’s teaching and guidance? Instructors are there to help, so any special needs can be openly communicated.
