About Emarie
I'm a native English speaker who is fluent in Dutch and Flemish with written and oral translation experience. At the company I previously worked at for two years, I took Dutch calls, corresponded via email and live-chat in Dutch, and helped our marketing team with Dutch website translations. I lived in both Belgium and The Netherlands for a year and a half, and my goal is to teach you in the best, most engaging, personalized format for you!
I've been speaking Dutch for a total of 7 years now and I'm very comfortable teaching and find education to be so fun and important. Can't wait to work with you and help you study the wonderful Dutch language! I'm excited by and passionate about everything from the Dutch culture to quirky Dutch phrases.
I've also taken a number of TESOL certification clases, so I'm confident in language teaching and the process of language learning from both directions.
Dutch has a place in my heart like nothing else does. I feel so grateful to have had the priviledge to learn this unique language and it brings me pure joy to share it with others. Speaking Dutch helps me understand my own native language better, and opens my perspecitve on life and the world in such a special way. I look forward to each lesson and helping each student!
The first time I taught Dutch was in the Netherlands, where I gave a few free lessons to a family that immigrated from Cape Verde to Rotterdam and was looking to improve their Dutch skills. Then, I had a student reach out to me directly when I lived on the East Coast, to whom I then taught for a number of months. I have one year of experience teaching high school students, and I worked as a Teaching and Research assistant at an international university in Hawaii for a year.
I took a 6-week full time, intensive Dutch training course at the MTC in Provo, Utah in 2016.
I lived in Belgium and The Netherlands from February 2016 to July 2017. I tought in the Dutch language and continued my personal Dutch language study for an hour every day during that entire time.
I took the Dutch FLATS test and passed with flying colors, earning 12 college credits by acing that test.
I worked as the designated Dutch-speaking Customer Service Agent and Account Manager (respectively) for LifeVantage Corporation from May 2019-November 2020.
I've been teaching weekly private Dutch lessons since Novemeber of 2020 until present.

First, I'll ask a number of questions regarding your goals with learning Dutch. Our first lesson will be a sort of "consultation" style, where we get to know each other and we'll work together to figure out the best approach for us to take. It's comfortable, motivating, and fun!

Ask the potential teacher to set up a video call or meet in person so that you can gauge if their personality and approach will be conducive to your individual learning style and needs.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should know their main motive behind wanting to learn a second language and have a goal in mind for using it. Additionally, students who have an understanding of their personal schedule, study constraints, and favorite methods of learning will be able to be more productive when talking to teachers about their needs.

Emarie is super nice and makes learning dutch fun. I really looked forward to going to my lesson every week and it gave me more motivation to practice on my own. Having english as her first language, she understood the difficulties and confusions I had and helped me through them. Lessons included grammer, dutch traditions and history, casual dutch conversation, and more. Dutch is a beautiful, interesting language and culture and if you are interested in learning (which you should be) Emarie is the tutor for you.
